About the Author

Isabella Mary Beeton was born in London is 1836, where she grew up in a household of twenty-one children. It took Isabella four years to compile her masterwork, publishing Mrs Beeton's Book of Household Management in 1861. It contains an enormous amount of information to help people live, in Isabella Beeton's own words, 'economically, tastefully and well'. Her style, imparting information as clearly and simply as possible, was hugely influential. The book sold 60,000 copies in its first year, but Isabella Beeton died four years later, in 1865, aged just twenty-eight. The enduring popularity of Mrs Beeton's Book of Household Management is testament to the quality of her advice.

5.0 out of 5 stars Complete and simple advanced cookery 4 Feb 2002
By A Customer
I come from Spain and I was not familiarized with Mrs. Beeton and her tradition at all. I just came across the book the other day in the house of a friend and I want it... It's simple, it's clear and it's informative. The ammount of recipes is fantastic and it describes how to make even the bizarrest thing. Anyway, if you are not really used to cook, I would try something simpler.

4.0 out of 5 stars Wonderfully nostalgic 23 Aug 1999
By A Customer
Rose Gray and Ruth Roger's did it in the '90s with their River Cafe Cook Book and Arabella Boxter did it in the '70s with her First Slice Your Cook Book. Mrs Beeton did it over 100 years ago with this book and it's still wonderful. Mrs Beeton's Cookery and Household Management is part of our rich culinary heritage. It's still fabulous and is just as relevant today as it was a century ago.

5.0 out of 5 stars Mrs Beeton 26 Feb 2011
I had always ignored Mrs. Beeton type cookbooks, thinking them old fashioned. I was at my son's house a couple of weeks ago and he had a copy. I glanced through it and knew immediately that I had to have a copy.
It is a complete way of how to run a household, not just recipes but all sort of tips.
The recipes are good old fashioned recipes which seem to have dissapeared from modern cookbooks but have been complemented by the book being regularily updated on the express wish of Isabella Beeton. She died quite young at I think, 36 years old but she made her husband promise to upgrade her cookbook to include the latest techniques and "gadjets". The Publishers seem to have carried on this wish.

I would reccomend anyone who has a love of cookery to get hold of a copy of this book. It has some very interesting recipes and household hints!
My copy has about 1.300 pages!
