After being wowed by Vanska's Beethoven 4 & 5, this was my second dip into his recent Beethoven series. This time I was already atuned to Vanska's rather open Beethoven sound and more than ready to hear more. Many of the same virtues are on display - great clarity in rhythm and rhythmic interplay, a wealth of telling interpretive detail, really telling phrasing and building of those special Beethoven moments, fine recorded sound.
The Second is to my ears somewhat lacking in the charm that is so evident in, say, Harnoncourt's excellent account. Vanska's 2nd is darker, perhaps deeper and certainly far more flammable. It is less of surprise to know that the Eroica is just around the corner. It is in no way a comfortable account and may perhaps be harder to love. But it is deeply impressive and I would not be without it.
Vanska's Seventh is also very impressive and often revalatory. But, to my ear and compared to Vanska's 4th and 5th, I wonder: is there sometimes a slight sense that Vanska is working too hard to make his points? Or is it the listener who perhaps must work to make the plethora of interpretive ideas gel into a cohesive whole? Whatever, there is just a slight lack of that inevitability that the greatest performances of great works seem to have. Perhaps with time and further listening that sense will grow for me but for now this performance seems a little less great than those of the 4th and 5th. But I AM talking about greatness here ... and the thoroughly wild and exciting last movement is in a class of its own and must be heard.
All in all another great record from Vanka's Beethoven series and I can't wait to hear more.
