5.0 out of 5 stars Wholehearted Commitment 7 Feb 2004
By A Customer
What an impressive set. The astonishing vitality and freshness of insight make it difficult to believe the recordings were made when Menuhin was nearly eighty! He brings a generous wealth of experience and his own legendary musical gifts. There cannot be the slightest doubt about Menuhin’s wholehearted commitment to the music. And the Sinfonia Varsovia match his enthusiasm with superb response, their playing is beautiful, agile and full of energy. There is nothing in the least routine about Menuhin’s conducting. The string phrasing is marvellously agile and alert. Menuhin is able to combine the closest attention to the score with an utterly unsentimental truthfulness, the results are deeply moving but not in the least fussy. Tempi are generally fast, some hair-raisingly so! The finales of 2, 4, 8 and especially 7 carry a thrilling positive charge. The 5th has power and drive without any bombast. The Eroica, the Pastoral and the 9th are full of genuine joy and fiery light. Beautifully produced recordings carry truthfully balanced detail, catching at one extreme the strings’ almost breathless whisper at the start of the slow movements of 3 and 7 and at the other the outrageously thrilling timpani. This is a very special set of Beethoven performances, an absolute bargain not to be missed.

5.0 out of 5 stars a wonderful bargain - cheap at any price! 29 April 2007
By Mr. Ian A. Macfarlane TOP 100 REVIEWER
In his latter years, Menuhin played less (in public, at least) and conducted more. His Mozart and Beethoven Symphonies with the Sinfonia Varviso are among the great bargains of the CD catalogue. The orchestra is an excellent one and, whatever Menuhin did - and it is said that his conducting was often more inspirational than 'expert' in a technical sense - these performances are absolutely reliable but also absolutely alive. Beethoven is well served here by interpretations quite without idiosyncracy - you can trust them - but never with any sense of mere routine. From the playfulness of the First Symphony through the grandeur of the 'Eroica' and the momentum and drive of the Seventh up to the splendour of the Choral Finale in the Ninth, this is thoroughly gripping, and to get the set for so few pennies seems beyond beliief. Highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic value, outstanding recordings. 21 Nov 2006

This boxed set is truly phenomenal, especially at this price. Yehudi Menuhins notes on each symphony are concise and good, especially for No.5. A couple of the recordings are live, including the Fifth, which is excellent. The control of the orchestra is superb, each section being given it's chance to shine. Especially good is Symphony No.7: a piece i was not very familiar with, but which has won me over! Superb purchase.

2.0 out of 5 stars It's a good buy 11 Nov 2006
Overall this is a good buy, however, the fact that most of the symphonies are live makes most of the first movements of each symphony and last movement of each symphony quite annoiyng due to the fact the audience clap for quite a while makes this recording a two star rating.
