My reference set. 14 Aug 2011
By John S
This cycle is absolutely wonderful. Brendel's staggering command of the instrument combined with his wonderful imagination means there are times when I feel I can hear sounds I've never heard before -somehow it just seems to glow. In spite of the fact that every note in this set has the unmistakable Brendel magic, I always feel I'm just hearing Beethoven and not the pianist. Only the greatest artists can create such an illusion.

Owing to the consistent excellence throughout this set, it's the one I would recommend to anyone looking for a reference edition.

I had already the complete piano sonatas recorded by Daniel Barenboim for DG, a very good one but I was not completely satisfied, particularly for the latest opus. I'm very enjoyed by this remake of Alfred Brendel, which is from my point of you better than his other version for the same label (Brendel II). But despite of that, I had a deception hearing the opus 109 "Hammerklavier" recorded live, and also the opus 111. For the "Hammerklavier" Emil Gilels (DG) is clearly fantastic! For the opus 111, there's two outstanding recordings: Claudio Arrau (Philips not reissued by Decca London, a real shame!!!), and Rudolf Serkin recorded live in Vienna (DG with op.109 & 110). For the other sonatas Brendel is at his best, and it's a great musical pleasure. Just a word for the high technical quality of this box set: the unforgetable Philips sound for piano recordings!... I've quoted 5 stars because 4,5 is not possible and 4 wouldn't be enough. For a 5 stars quotation, above all there's Claudio Arrau complete recording, but for me everyone who like Beethoven's piano sonatas must have both Brendel and Arrau. Sorry for my poor english: I'm not British!...

Alfred Brendel seems to get right to the heart of all the music he plays; and thus to the heart of the composer, be it Haydn, Schubert or, as so marvellously here, Beethoven. Perhaps Brendel is a reincarnation from the living days of these composers, for he interprets their works to perfection, or so it seems to me.

This collection should be a joy for any lover of Beethoven's piano sonatas, not just because of the wonders of Brendel's hard-working dedication to the works (as always) but because of the fine qualitiy of the recordings that allows them to be heard as accurately as does the artist's impeccable technique.

Thank you, Decca - thank you Alfred.
