I see there are two reviews - one very positive and one strangely not) on a slightly older version of this record but I'm posting this here as this one seems to be the currently available issue.
This is my third purchase from Vanska's Beethoven series. Although I had other excellent versions of the Beethoven symphonies, Vanska's accounts of 4, 5, 2 and 7 had already thoroughly converted me to the special virtues that he brings to this music (great clarity in rhythm and rhythmic interplay, a real sense of zing, a wealth of telling interpretive detail and wonderful phrasing, great skill and imagination in the building of those special Beethoven moments, fine orchestral sound vividly recorded ...). I can now add another virtue: each of his special performances has it's own mood and flavour in a sharper focus than is, I think, usual with Beethoven symphony sets. Each symphony has its special flavour rather than just sounding like "another issue of Vanska's Beethoven series".
Vanska's accounts of 1 and 6 are outstanding. The first is light footed and positively sings (and dances, too). It is very different from his wonderful account of Beethoven 2 - a clear example of how Vanska presents works that often seem to go together as "early Beethoven" in sharply focused accounts that bring out the individual qualities in the works. The Pastoral is quite simply wonderful - beautifully flowing and uplifting. The storm is brilliantly built and the scene that follws it as rustic as you could wish.
These must surely be the best recorded versions of these two symphonies (something I don't say lightly - I love Bohm's and Harnoncourt's 6th, for example, and would not be without them ... but these Vanska accounts are indispensible).
I've also bought the remaining records from this series (3, 8 & 9) and will write on them soon.
