This is all right - can hardly hear the timpani solo - not as good as the Klemperer versions, I would say

HASH(0x9a2f73fc) out of 5 stars Well done 7 Mar. 2000
By Ryan Richards - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
A brilliant recording of these two symphonies. The first movement of the 4th sparkles with an energy I've never heard in it before. So does the finale, with a vivacious tempo augmented by crystal-clear perception of each note. The slow movement is taken up-tempo, as is Dohnanyi's wont, but it's played gently and/or passionately as needed, and the overall effect is quite lovely. The same goes for the 8th, where the C.O. displays an impressive mix of playfulness, power, and romanticism. My complaints would be with the last movement of the 8th, which drags a little (odd, considering the conductor), and the overall sound of the CD--it's a little more muffled than Telarc usually allows. However, these symphonies aren't going to get any better than this. Of all the Beethoven symphonies Dohnanyi recorded with the C.O., only the 5th and 7th are done better than these two are, methinks. Buy this CD.

HASH(0x9b308fc0) out of 5 stars It's not all about Szell 2 Nov. 2010
By Prescott Cunningham Moore - Published on Amazon.com

Comments that Dohnanyi's Beethoven cycle is simply an inferior rehashing of Szell's justly famous account are hogwash. Such misconceptions are easily dispelled in this magnificent Forth. Where Szell characterizes the B-flat major as the "slender Greek maiden" between the 3rd and the 5th, Dohnanyi's Apollonian approach sees the work as the logical forerunner to the great C-minor, the first movement of which was, after all, completed before Beethoven finished the Forth. After an aptly shaped introduction, Dohnanyi launches into the allegro proper at a fantastic clip, with all the rhythmic snap and energy found in current-day HIP performances. True, strings dominate the texture and the soft-grained timpani robs the music of some of it's inherent power, but the performance overflows with merit. Listen to the powerful attacks from the strings in the syncopated closing theme or the vividly present lower strings at the beginning of the development. It's exciting, youthful, and certainly not a repetition of anything we've heard from Cleveland before. Indeed, it is Dohnanyi's very youthfulness that makes the second movement - taken more as an allegretto - and the fabulously bumptious minuetto so joyous. It is these very qualities which makes Dohnanyi's approach continuously viable in this market, with cycles of the "new" Barenreiter eiditions from Barenboim, Zinman, Jarvi, and Vanska among others. It just goes to show that a conductor, like Szell before him, that pays careful attention to the score and properly characterizes the music will invariably create timeless readings.

If I had one complaint about Dohnanyi's Eighth, it was that the developmental climax was a giant, dynamic plateau. But, then again, turning to the score, Beethoven's only dynamic marking for the passage is subito forte so I cannot fault Dohnanyi for playing the music exactly as it is written. In all other respects, the music really shines, especially in the fabulous, if somewhat comfortably paced, finale, where Dohnanyi takes the vivace marking to heart.

Indeed, having lived with these interpretations now for over two decades, I cannot help but be impressed by Dohnanyi's inherent musicianship and consummate skill. He may not always equal Szell, but, then again, Szell does not always equal Dohnanyi. These are fabulous performances and at budget price, it would behoove any Beethoven lover to revisit Dohnanyi. It may not be the last word on Beethoven, but its certainly better than the recent cycles from Berlin (Abaddo) and Vienna (Rattle) and London (Haitink).

HASH(0x9b54a468) out of 5 stars the named and the unnamed 24 Oct. 2013

The pure beastly musical power and prowess gets exercised in this pair lurking unheralded beneath the famous named symphonies and overtures of the genius Ludwig.

This is Beethoven at his best. Casals could barely stand when he conducted these two symphonies, but he got the very best out of a fine orchestra.
