Wow! This recording is so fresh and full of life. The choir is absolutely top!
It's quite different reading than the Klemperer recording that is my other favourite. Here you get more of the details and less of the monumentality. Quite refreshing.

I have heard numerous performances, some good, some not so good. This recording by Philippe Herreweghe is outstanding in every way. Inevitably, it will be compared with the recording made by another period specialist, John Eliot Gardiner. Gardiner's performance is also first-rate. His performance is several minutes shorter than Herreweghe's, the difference occurring mainly in the opening Kyrie and concluding Agnus Dei movements (the inner movements are pretty much the same in duration in both performances). I think it is largely a matter of personal taste as to which performance is better, and my choice is this one by Philippe Herreweghe. The clarity, majesty, precision, and verve of the performance, and the technical quality of the recording, are simply irresistible.
