I would thoroughly recommend this disc for any fan of Beethoven, being a fair reading of a piece which has been mystifyingly ignored. The 'Piano Concerto' is Beethoven's own transcription of his Violin Concerto, arranged for piano. Beethoven does not spend a great deal of effort in re-interpreting the music, but it is surprising how effective it sounds and how quickly the ear adjusts to the unfamiliar instrumentation. Any moments where the piano arrangement is less effective can be forgiven, for the work provides a fascinating alternative look at one of Beethoven's greatest achievements.

Where the original violin work has emotion and intensity, this piano version has charm in abundance. The English Chamber orchestra is perfectly weighted for this work which the piano gives a chamber quality to. Although it would be nice to have a cleaner, digital sound the recording is perfectly adequate and Barenboim gives a committed performance.

There is no doubt that this piano concerto version is no match for the original violin concerto, however anyone interested in taking a new look at Beethoven's overly familiar music should give this record a chance, I rate it as a real treasure in my collection.

Having heard this work numerous times in its original form, ie for Violin and Orchestra, it is very refreshing to be able to now enjoy the same work in this transcription setting for piano and orchestra. It makes for an excellent alternative, and the music sounds just as great all the way through where the piano replaces the violin parts. I very much enjoy transcriptions and this one is no exception.

Performance to treasure 13 Jun. 2006
By Aspiring critic - Published on Amazon.com

This is a must for Beethoven lovers. In Barenboim's rendition, the violin concerto becomes like a sixth piano concerto, ethereal, beautiful and dramatic all at once, like Beethoven's fourth piano concerto. In this version, the concerto sounds as wonderful as it does on the violin, at times better. The cadenza is Beethoven's own and remarkable, with accompanying timpani. Zukerman's romances are superb too, full of pathos.

Why don't pianists play it more! 14 Mar. 2013

This is extraordinary! Beethoven's violin concerto (which is brilliant with no comparison) written for piano and orchestra. The right hand is the same as the original violin -- added accompaniment with the left; and a sublime cadenza (written by Beethoven), which is very different from the original cadenza. A perfect buy!

I have at least 5 versions of Op. 61 by different violinists. This is some of the most divine music ever written.
