Format:Audio CD
This really is the definitive recording of Beethoven's "Missa Solemnis". Not only is Karajan's conducting a reminder of why he's constantly voted top conductor of all time in various polls, but the singing - especially from Janowitz and Wunderlich - is so vital and so moving that you never want to hear another version. It was a great idea to couple the Beethoven with Mozart'a "Coronation" Mass, which has a wonderfully balanced solo quartet and also shows the Vienna Singverein to be a choir that can sing with great gusto. I urge you all to buy this set!

I can't add much to the above two reviews,except to agree wholeheartedly with them!
When Karajan got it right,there is just nobody who can do it better.
Of course he also was able to get the BEST soloists,as here.
What is especially poignant is that the Missa Solemnis was recorded in Feb 1966,and Wunderlich died in Sept 1966.heartbreaking to lose such a voice when it was just coming into full flower.
Both works will, I feel,never be better conducted,played and sung.
A real bargain too.

Totally support the other reviewer's comments. A gobsmackingly wonderful performance, with the Berliners pouring out pure gold and the greatest vocal quartet imaginable. Can't think of anyone capable of offering as spiritual an interpretation as this one from HvK.
