If the Beethoven Diabelli variations have not yet interested you, and if you had thought they were boring variations on a banal theme, please listen to Pollini's interpretation and judge again. By the end of the performance, you will feel as if a rare jewel has shone its amazing light onto you. Pollini succeeds more than others in illuminating the areas of infinite genuis that the composer has put into these variations.

Pollini is recognised as one of the foremost classical pianists of our day. His renowned clarity of touch and artistic interpretation are well exemplified in the excellent new recording by DGG. The Diabelli variations are acknowledged to be a challenging task for even the best pianists, and Pollini rises superbly to the occasion. The contrast between the variations is nicely maintained, without the harshness in the quiet passages that marred some of his earlier performances. Spot-on recording quality makes this a worthy addition to the Beethoven enthusiast's library.

The superb pianistic skill of Maurizio Pollini needs no further comment from me.
I can thoroughly recommend this CD to anyone considering adding it to their collection. A real gem!
