Fascinating, but flawed,
This review is from: Beethoven - Diabelli Variations (Audio CD)
I really like Anderszewski, I think he's a great pianist and a recent recital was one of the best live concerts I've attended. However, I think this recording is not one of his best. Despite the beautiful playing and his very strong ideas (which are, of course, perfectly realised), I never got the feeling that the work gathered any momentum towards the culmination in the slow variations and fugue. Some of his slow playing nearly grinds to a halt, like in Variation 14. I can see why so many people love it, but it's not for me - indeed I think it's a 'love it or hate it' kind of recording.
For Anderszewski's best, I'd point you towards his Bach, Mozart or Szymanowski recordings. For the best in the Diabelli Variations, go for Stephen Kovacevich, either his early Philips recording or his more daring Onyx remake.

Spellbinding,

This review is from: Beethoven - Diabelli Variations (Audio CD)
I first heard this performer when he played this promethean work at the Leeds Piano Competition in 1990, holding the audience spellbound, only to walk out during his subsequent performance of the Webern Variations. This recording of the Diabelli is certainly one of the most penetrating available, going up besides Kovacevich, Richter, Serkin and Brendel as one of the best. Of course, there can be no 'best' in this work, but this is a very welcome addition to the discography.

This superb recording has become legendary by now. A must-have for all classical piano fans.
