Close your eyes and so often this could be Mozart. And yet what is interesting about these works, apart from their spritely melodies (something critics have often accused Beethoven of lacking), is the emergence of that Beethoven sound. When you reach the 'allegro con spirito' of Op.9 No. 3 (the trio in C Minor, bien sûr), the black stacks of Romantic cumulonimbus are increasingly visible o'the High Classical horizon.

There is a lot of beauty here: the opening movement of Op. 9 No. 2 with its lovely insistent motif; the slow movement of Op. No. 3, which is played here with a real aching beauty by the Lendvai String Trio. Compare the poise and timelessness they tease out of it with their fiery way they launch into the ensuing scherzo. Mercifully, this trio eschew the kind of vibrato that make certain historic recordings sound like a collection of Jimi Hendrix solos bundled awkwardly together. And there is the kind of confident synchrony that usually comes with far more years. Beautiful string sound (no grating trebles or thin 'scratchy' rasps) and flawless intonation also abound.

These are unexpectedly mature performances and utterly commendable. Discover a lighter side of Beethoven whist still getting your brooding Weltschmerz jollies.

I have nothing but praise for this pair of discs. If you think the string trio a poor relation of the string quartet, try them. There is a richness to the Lendvai's playing, particularly in the Opus 9 trios, that gives the impression of a bigger ensemble. Articulation, tempi and style are all impeccable. Most enjoyable.

This is an absolutely splendid rendition - I have listened to it again and again, each time discovering new layers. Excellent
