Great value for money 16 Nov 2010
Format:Audio CD
Like one of your other reviewers, I was looking for specific overtures but at this price it was well worth buying this double CD set.

I found the clarity of sound brought all the overtures to life and it was like listening to them all afresh eventhough one or two of them are quite hackneyed these days, there being hundreds and hundreds of versions of Egmont, Leonora No3 etc. I found that using Beethoven's original tempi the orchestra made the music more exciting. Compare for example Zinman's speed of the main theme of the King Stephen overture with that of Klemperer's.

Absolutely great value for money.

We have lift-off 18 July 2011
Format:Audio CD
This is probably the most exciting set of Beethoven overtures on the market, and at a great price. The speeds are exhilarating (sometimes alarming, eg
'Coriolan') with special virtuosity from the Tonhalle woodwinds, though the strings run them pretty close in the highest register. The master-magician behind all this is Zinman himself. Whereas his Beethoven symphony cycle with the same orchestra had its unevenesses here he is uniformly excellent with alert, often startling phrasing and great propulsion. The performances carry you along with them and explain why Beethoven was such a force of nature in his time (and still is). The recording has plenty of space around it, with both detailing and silences crystal clear. Terrific.

OK, so why do we need yet another Beethoven cycle?

Two reasons

1) David Zinman is the first conductor to use the new Bärenreiter Urtext edition of Beethoven's orchestral works, which set out to correct the many known errors and omissions from the previous Breitkopf edition, theoretically taking us closer to Beethoven's original vision.

2) Zinman also uses Beethoven's own metronome markings - which are markedly faster in many places than "traditional" 20th Century performances.

Worth having.
