After the complete Bach set, this seemed like a good idea and it was. A comprehensive set of Beethoven recordings, all of which are good sound and good interpretations, some really good. Excellent value.

Great performances of the CONCERTOS in this new edition and well worth it ... a BARGAIN! 6 Dec 2013
By Lee A. Steels - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
This new BRILLIANT Classics set (2013) replaces the excellent 2011 set. There are some changes which deserve mentioning, especially the concertos. I bought this new set on Canadian Amazon (Amazon.ca), as it was under a hundred Canadian dollars. What a bargain … a little more than a buck a disc.

I have listed the main common performers in the 2011 and 2013 editions … and the new ones with comments on each.
Good old performances from the 2011 set which remain in this new edition.

Discs 1-5 The Nine Symphonies Herbert Blomstedt, Staatskapelle Dresden. Excellent recordings and likeable performances just a notch bellow Karajan, Szell, Zinman, Gardiner and Wand. I enjoyed Blomstedt’s no nonsense approach. Anyone new to Beethoven will enjoy these solid performances in good sound.
Discs 46-59 Alfred Brendel’s Sonata and piano recordings from the early 60s. These are very good early Brendel and so interesting to compare with his later complete recordings. Worth the price of the set alone. ( I know there are lots of Brendel detractors, but I really enjoy his scholastic and laid-back approach.)
Discs 11-12 The Complete Overtures with Stanislaw Skrowaczewski and the Minnesota Orchestra. These are outstanding and hard to beat. (The Reiner Beethoven recordings had two unbelievable recordings of Beethoven Overtures and Karajan’s are very powerful.)
There are many other discs with excellent performances which remain the same as in the earlier edition
What’s NEW and worth mentioning:

The PIANO CONCERTOS and Triple concerto are done by Yefim Bronfman with David Zinman and the Tonhalle of Zurich Orchestra. These are FIVE STAR performances and recordings and are a definite improvement in the new edition. To my ears, these performances rank at or very near the top of any of the many concerto recordings . Thanks to Brilliant for this outstanding change.
The VIOLIN CONCERTO is with Christian Tetzlaff with David Zinman and the Tonhalle. I love this performance. It is also FIVE STAR and right at the top of the heap. Hooray!
The STRING QUARTETS are with the Suske Quartet: Karl Suske violin 1, Klaus Peters violin 2, Karl-heinz Dommus viola, Matthias Pfaender cello. These recordings are very clear and as well recorded as many modern versions. They are good but to my ears are FOUR STAR performances. They are fine if you haven’t heard the quartets done by an eminent quartet. The change Brilliant made here is perhaps to get a better sound. I’m not sure the performances are as good as the previous edition which used two different quartets.
There are many other different performances … too many to list in detail here.

In summary: An excellent set well worth FIVE STARS, particularly for the CONCERTOS. For anyone who is new to Beethoven and/or complete editions, this set is highly recommended.
May you have many hours, weeks and years of enjoying the MASTER … the immortal Ludwig van Beethoven. Hooray for my greatest hero!

Value For Money is WAY out of Proportion Here! BUY NOW!! 8 April 2014
By RF - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD Verified Purchase
The value for money in this collection is phenomenal; very much out of proportion to the money spent. If you are a Beethoven connoisseur, you have no excuse not to buy (period). If you love classical music and love hanging onto your cash, as well, you have no excuse not to buy, either (period). Value has NEVER sounded so good.

Of special mention here are the selections by Stanislaw Skrowaczewski and his Minnesota Orchestra. I fell in love with his/their Rite of Spring decades ago, and truly have yet to find another "Rite" that is played with such wit, abandon and cohesion; a true masterwork! That said, the Skrowaczewski/Minnesota pieces in this collection are true standouts as far as interpretation, energy, verve and guts go (I think the urban term is BALLS!) (My feeling only, but this is how they reach in grab me at my deepest). If Beethoven were conducting the pieces played by the Minnesota Orchestra under Skrowaczewski, this is EXACTLY how he would conduct them. Phenomenal! Overstatement? Perhaps. But, Stanislaw Skrowaczewski and the Minnesota Orchestra's playing is beyond top-notch; they are at absolute apex. Revel in them. And the rest of this box set!

If you are in to Beethoven, this is your love-fest fantasy!

EDIT: May 7, 2014

I wanted to make some additional comments on the sound and other performances contained herein.

Sound quality is excellent throughout. The chamber music sound is uniformly excellent. The 2 Rampal discs from the late 1960's show their age, as far as production values are concerned, but the performances are heavenly. The performances by the Suske Quartett, Trio Elegiaque and Zurich Strings are extremely well done. Klara Wurtz is outstanding on piano with violinist Kristof Barati (also outstanding) [Violin Sonatas]. She is equally wonderful with Timora Rosler [Cello Sonatas], though I haven't yet warmed to Rosler. Alfred Brendel's performances of the Piano Sonatas and Variations are top notch. The sound is a bit dated but not bad in the least. The Zinman "Creatures of Prometheus" is very likable and in good sound, as well as the Schoenzeler "Ruins of Athens" and "King Stephan".

I have to agree with the above reviewer regarding the Symphonies and Piano Concertos; Bronfman and Zinman tread very near sublime with their performances of the Piano Concertos.

There is just so much value here that any true Beethoven lover would certainly be remiss and remorseful in not taking advantage of this opportunity.

Good listening!
great stuff 24 Nov 2014

at the moment i am one disc shy of the half way mark in this set. hey it has been a hoot so far. i was only familiar with the 9 symphonys till i made this purchase. it is all pretty darn good too. i have been enjoying the chamber portion of this set the last week and a half. great recordings all around. and next for me will be the solo piano stuff. i am not well versed in writing about this kind of music. i like it and at times i guess Beethoven was rockin' the halls back then. it's just i dont think people got to jump up and twist like their butts were just vibrating in their seats then. also i had to giggle with a couple of the newer recordings here. some of the most current recordings are only a few years old. and they show the limitations of the digital process. these are not complaints at all. i laughed when i could hear the keys on the bassoon clacking a bit while playing. i think an older analog recording would not be that clear. just an observation that is all

Lovely Ludwig van 7 Jan 2014
By A Coustomer - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD Verified Purchase
The Beethoven Complete Edition is an 86 CD box set containing all of Ludwig van Beethoven's works, from the variations to the symphonies. All of the recordings I've heard are (mostly) perfect, with excellent sound quality and passionate performances. A must for any Beethoven lover.
