Uchida is a superb interpreter of Beethoven, wonderfully partnered by Sanderling and the Royal Concertgebouw and cleanly and clearly recorded. So why am I not giving it 5 stars? It is difficult for me to put into words, but somehow the music-making is just too perfect: it washes over me and through me, it satisfies me, but somehow just fails to inspire me. It seems that Uchida is being just a little too restrained, and trying too hard to avoid stamping her own personality on the music. Not always a bad thing, I hasten to add - I can think of other versions that go off the scale in the other direction - but I think I would have liked to hear a little more of her coming through in the music. However, these are trivial points and I am sure others would disagree with me. This is a wonderful set of concertos, and if you want to buy the five concertos as a boxed set it is surely one of the best, especially at this price.
