Biography

Steven Osborne is one of Britain’s foremost musicians, renowned for his idiomatic approach to a wide variety of repertoire from the mainstream classical works of Mozart, Beethoven and Brahms to the rarefied worlds of Messiaen, Tippett and Britten. He has won numerous awards and prizes including the 2009 Gramophone Award for his recording of Britten’s works for piano and orchestra, ... Read more in Amazon's Steven Osborne Store

Product Description

Review

Beethoven wrote his Op 119 Bagatelles 11 short pieces each lasting no more than a minute or two when he was working on two of his biggest works: the Missa Solemnis and the Ninth Symphony. His Leipzig publisher complained that they were such insignificant trifles no one would believe they were by Beethoven: not only slight but on the whole easy too. The joy of having a player of Steven Osborne's spare, rhythmically incisive brilliance shows the idiocy of the publisher's words. These pieces, together with the early Op 33 and his last work for piano the Op 126 display Beethoven's genius for creating artistic grandeur from the most miniature of pianistic forms. --Observer,22/04/12

As we might expect from the excellent Steven Osborne, his new traversal of the three big sets of Beethoven Bagatelles with six other small pieces is beautifully poised and unfailing intelligent. Osborne's new recording will take place without apology in any company. --IRR,June'12

Osborne has delved deep to extract so much from cameos that pack emotional enormity within small places. --Gramophone,Jul'12

5.0 out of 5 stars terrific playing 20 July 2012
By schumann_bg TOP 500 REVIEWER
Format:Audio CD
Steven Osborne gives wonderful projection to these pieces with the result that they emerge with their true stature, which is far greater than their scale would lead you to think. They're a bit like Chopin's mazurkas in that they are short utterances written concurrently while he was working on other things, and you can hear some motifs which are similar to things in the piano sonatas, which has the effect of revitalising those pieces too in one's mind ... Altogether it is a brilliant disc and a worthy follow-up to Steven Osborne's benchmark Ravel set - he is definitely in the top three British pianists for me, and his name guarantees a true experience of the music, whatever it is.

5.0 out of 5 stars Chips from the master's bench... 6 Jun 2012
Format:Audio CD|Amazon Verified Purchase
This is a wonderful disc. A friend and I sat last night and listened to it and were delighted that these small works have finally found their ideal interpreter. Steven Osborne plays these works with absolute clarity and total muscianship, giving these pieces the status they deserve.

The works themselves are almost 'warm ups' for Beethoven's major (and not so major) piano sonatas. Some are very short indeed but are still unmistakably by the master.

Possibly the best praise I can give this disc is that it is in no way inferior to the great Alfred Brendel's recording! (And, whisper it - Osborne may be a better technical player!)

If you love Beethoven AND great piano playing, don't hesitate.

5.0 out of 5 stars The not-so-little bagatelles 1 Jan 2013
By Bruce A. Mcdonald - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD|Amazon Verified Purchase
One rarely hears the Beethoven bagatelles, perhaps because they are "minimalist" Beethoven--totally contrary to his usual image. However, they are not "little" in the sense of tawdry--they're just short! As always, the Beethoven thoughtfulness (and sound) is there. Scottish pianist Steven Osborne seems to be unable to put a foot wrong in his recent recordings, and this is another fine one. The engineers did a good job, too, of capturing a realistic sound. Definitely worth exploring!
