Product Description
1926, and Joe Sandilands is back from India, enjoying the frantic pleasures of Jazz Age London. Yet, there is a darkness behind all that postwar gaiety. A woman has been discovered bludgeoned to death in her suite at the Ritz. A broken window and missing emerald necklace suggest that it is a burglary gone wrong. But the corpse is that of a much-respected member of the British establishment, Dame Beatrice Joliffe, one of the founders of the Wrens, and so Scotland Yard send Joe to conduct a swift enquiry. Her companion, an ex-chorus girl, falls from Waterloo Bridge at twilight. Two of the Dame's clique of eager young Wrens commit suicide. All these deaths make Joe suspect that Beatrice has been killed by someone close to her but suddenly he finds that the case is closed and he is asked by his superiors to surrender his files. Against the background of the looming General Strike, and pressure from unseen governmental presences he struggles on, picking his way through the political panic and rebelling against authority, through to a shattering solution to the killings. Praise for Barbara Cleverly: "* 'A well plotted first novel... the atmosphere of the dying days of the Raj is colourfully captured' Susanna Yager, Sunday Telegraph * 'A great blood and guts blockbuster.' Guardian * 'It evokes, and in some ways surpasses, the work of Agatha Christie.' Publishers Weekly"

5.0 out of 5 stars The Joe Sandilands series gets stronger with each book., 26 Jul 2006
By James North (Hertfordshire, UK) - See all my reviews
I had wondered whether, having returned from India, the colour might have faded but - no. Cleverly is a master when it comes to distilling the essence of a place and time and she confidently takes the reader back into 1920s London with its dark as well as its limelit side. From the Ritz to the backstreets of Soho, Joe's London is convincing, fresh and beguiling. And in this book there are welcome flashes of humour - Joe's light-heartedness breaks through. Perhaps he's more relaxed now he's back on his own patch? The plot goes at the usual Cleverly gallop and - though I hung on! - again, I didn't guess!

4.0 out of 5 stars Entertaining, 28 Jan 2008
By Carr (England) - See all my reviews
This began as an entertaining read, there was an excellent feeling of period which worked well.
The plot carried me along, gradually laying down layer after layer of detail and promising me a clever and carefully crafted ending, but suddenly there was a complete change of direction.
The police investigation is ended and there are hints of espionage and the presence of heavies from Special Branch and the then infant Secret Services.
The reason was eventually shown, but I'm afraid I found that part very unsatisfying.
The characters were all very good and very well drawn, but I thought the young WPC was wasted, I'd have liked more of her and her fate at the very end was out of character with the girl we'd been shown before.

1.0 out of 5 stars The Bee's Kiss- A Surprising Sting, 23 Jun 2006
By J. O. Dance - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
The story perfectly captures the class ridden society of the inter war years in England. The murder investigation gradually reveals the unpleasant side to the gilded society characters that Joe Sandilands meets. The story has many twists and turns and no-one could guess the final solution, but Joe Sandiland's heart learns that all is not what it seems. A very clever blending of characters stories within the plot. An excellent read that has accurate historical detail and a very charming and likeable detective.
