Book Description

1 Jun 1987
Behind the bar at Jameel?s in Cairo hang two mugs engraved with the names of Ram and Font. During their years together in London, they drank many a pint of Bass from these mugs. But there is no Bass in Nasser?s Egypt ? so Ram and Font have to make do with a heady mixture of beer, vodka and whisky. Yearning for Bass they long to be far from a revolution that neither serves the people nor allows their rich aunts to live the life of leisure they are accustomed to. Stranded between two cultures, Ram and Font must choose between dangerous political opposition and reluctant acquiescence. First published in 1964, Beer in the Snooker Club is a classic of the literature of emigration.

5.0 out of 5 stars A forgotten work of genius 18 April 2002
By A Customer
Format:Paperback
Beer in the Snooker Club is a work of genius. For some unknown reason, it has disappeared from literary sight. It works on multiple levels: a touching love story, a humourous scam, but at the same time a very subtle and understated exploration of alienation and multiculturalism. It is never heavy handed, it is always a delight to read but it remains consistently more profound and real than 99.9% of the pap churned out by today's novelists. And, my wife reminds me, it is all about the problems caused by reading too many books - so don't say you weren't warned.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great book 13 April 2008
Format:Paperback
It is an absolute shame that Waguih Ghali and this excellent book are so unknown. It is an even bigger shame that this is Ghali's only book (he commited suicide in the mid-60's). This book offers a funny and addictively readable exploration into conflicts of identity, class, society, love, ideas and generations. Story line is simple enough: a young Egyptian struggles with these and other issues in 1950's Egypt finding himself trapped between his Egyptian background and his western education and ideological inclinations. By any standard this is a classic; unfortunately few recognise it as such. Enjoy!

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing 28 Jan 2003
By "fmz1"
Format:Paperback
An Eastern answer to the “Catcher in the Rye”, this book delves into multiculturalism, imperialism, love and social status. It gives a great insight into Egyptian life; a way of life that hasn’t changed much since the book was written. A great book if you want to learn about the Middle East, and a better book if you want just want to learn. It is also one of the funniest pieces of literature I’ve ever read.
