Andy Hamilton (Drop the Dead Donkey, Trevor's World of Sport etc.) wrote and directed this brilliant series, and if you enjoy work by Alan Ayckbourn or Mike Leigh you may well find this to your enjoyment.

Originally shown on television between August 28th and September 6th 2001, this is written and directed in the style of 'Play for Today' from the seventies and eighties.

Revolving around the conversations that occur between three couples who live in adjacent houses, and almost without exception, the entire dialogue is delivered from within the three bedrooms. I would describe it as an intense personality study rather than a character study (if that makes sense). We all know people like this, or perhaps we can even admit to being one of them.

16:9 Anamorphic Widescreen, Stereo and Subtitles for the hard of hearing. No extras, but crystal clear picture and sound with wonderful acting from all concerned.

One of my most satisfying DVD purchases, and will definitely be worth another viewing in a few years time.

5.0 out of 5 stars Perfect balance of drama and humour 5 Nov 2005

Andy Hamilton (who was one of the main people behind Drop the Dead Donkey) directed and wrote this excellent piece of television. The delicate balance of drama and wry humour perfectly captures the banter between ordinary people dealing with life on an intimate level. At its title may suggest, Bedtime works at a gentle pace, but still manages to be great entertainment.

5.0 out of 5 stars BEDTIME - its fun 23 Sep 2006
I'm so pleased - I've just found out that this is available on DVD ! I saw it when it was originally on BBC. It was quite absorbing and enjoyable and all about the interaction between people and their neighbours, as witnessed from the bedroom. Timothy West and Sheila Hancock are excellent but the star for me is Emma Pierson. She shines like a bright star every time she appears in it and I love the accent she puts on (New Zealand, I think). A good buy for someone who likes clever scripting and isn't looking for lots of fast-paced action.

5.0 out of 5 stars Pillow talk and more. 1 Jun 2005
By John Austin HALL OF FAME TOP 1000 REVIEWER VINE™ VOICE
Andy Hamilton wrote and directed this mini soap opera in 2001. Set in the bedrooms of adjoining houses in an ordinary London street, it allows us to peep into the interactive lives of three contrasting couples. Andrew and Alice are the senior couple, married for forty years. Paul and Sarah are the young couple with a baby. Sapphire is a budding actress, recently arrived from New Zealand, who is visited each night by her lover. She is also visited by a reporter who believes the lover is a TV celebrity. Can she film them secretly, and achieve a scoop?

The dialogue is brilliant. How the characters act and react with each other is fascinating. There are serious issues addressed and also plenty of humour. The crises developing in the street and in each house move to unexpected climaxes.

Watching skilled actors at work and close up has been part of the fascination for me. They obviously relish their roles. There is not a weakness in the ensemble. If one must be specially commended it is Emma Pierson only because she has by far the most difficult role to play.

Multi-layered, endlessly fascinating, and finely detailed, this six-part series makes a DVD that will provide repeated pleasure.
