I would recomend this book to anyone who would enjoy a nice pleasent read that goes back to an age when life was more inocent and people were more trusting.

This is the best book I have read in a very long time, its never slow or boring and its almost like you are there with these brave nurses.

I am now nearing the end of the book and I don't want it to finish, I may even read it again in a week or two it's that good.

This was a wonderful book, and will appeal to anyone who yearns to travel, or who has travelled in the past. Gwenda, Pat and their friends were very brave to travel into all corners of the US and beyond, discovering a culture that was largely unknown to those back in the UK. Like many other reviewers I was sad when the book reached the end. The commentary from Barbara at the end of the book was very interesting. It's a gentle read, yet still gives the feeling that the five nurses were on a real adventure of a lifetime.

WHAT A FABULOUS STORYLINE. This book is basically a true adventure story about five nurses and their travels in USA. This adventure took place long before our present idea of travel around the world. The nurses in FLATUS travelled to many weird and wonderful places, they most always seemed to get work even if not in the nursing line. Can you imagine a small car with five people and all the luggage they had being allowed on the roads nowadays - doubt it. Think they were very brave to even venture to USA to work far less then decide to go travelling afterwards. The locals way back then seemed very friendly - would this happen now-not so sure. Maybe this is a book our young people should read and not just golden oldies like me.

Wow, what a great read. You warm to the ladies straight away, the book flows seamlessly so you always know where you are in the travels, what year it is and how people lived. You get such a sense of the culture shock too from England to America in 1950's, it's exciting, interesting and humourous. It paints such a clear picture you could be watching a movie.

These ladies really rolled up their sleeves never took no for an answer and worked their way around America in a car that amazed everyone to get as far as it did. You meet so many characters and they don't just flit in and out of the book they stay with the nurses as they send regular postcards back and forth and pop in to meet up old friends and friends of friends, so in turn you grow attached to all the characters they meet.

I loved reading about girls in 1950's doing it for themselves, literally. They fixed the car , they nursed, they did odd jobs to make travel money, they completly absorbed themselves into American life, they were a stong unit who forged real friendships, they threw great parties and they saw more of America than most Americans, which given this was 50/60 years ago is amazing.(Even going to Alaska and Haiwaii before they became part of the US)

I just wanted more! Highly recommend this.

I bought this book because my sister Barbara Braverman nee Kynaston {since deceased} a nurse working in London's Hammersmith Hospital followed this path to work in the Pan American hospital in Cleveland Ohio way back in 1955.

She lead a very exiting and interesting life in America, embracing the culture 'the American way of life', she followed her dream, returning on many occasions, with her family of six children.{two sets of twins} to visit their English family, and the UK.

It was a great experience visiting them in Sedalia Miss', and lovely to accompany Barbara, Elliot, and the children on trips to London and though-out the UK we have continued the same again, with their children.
It's lovely knowing the bond is as strong as ever, and always look forward to their next visit.

Barbara would have loved this book, I know, as I also have enjoyed reading it, as that special interest was there..

The price was great - The delivery was excellent - a wonderful service all round, well done Amazon.
Thank you

Pat Gardner

I couldn't put this book down. Such a fantastic story and recall of true events. I have bought another for a friend as a present and will read it again soon. I just loved it. The drama and life's events were so real - I felt I was there. Fantastic writing for a first novel, well done Barbara and Gwenda.
