Product Description

Review

"[Bedouin Life] succeeds handsomely as a humanist study: beliefs, values, folklore, ethnobiology are nicely treated and the natural habitat is described with a geographer's sensitive eye. It is the best book to date with respect to describing how Bedouin perceive their environment and manage their resources... The book is a fine contribution to Middle East studies, cultural geography, arid lands ecology, and to the ethnographic literature on the Bedouins." Choice "The picture the author provides of the Khushmaan's relation to their land and its scattered riches is convincing... Anthropologists, geographers, and even archaeologists all will find material here to interest them." Middle East Journal

Product Description

Between the Nile River and the Red Sea, in the northern half of Egypt's Eastern Desert, live the Bedouins of the Ma'aza tribe. Joseph Hobbs lived with the Khushmaan Ma'aza clan for almost two years, gathering information for a study of traditional Bedouin life and culture. The resulting work, "Bedouin Life in the Egyptian Wilderness", is the first modern ethnographic portrait of the Ma'aza Bedouins.

Joseph Hobbs based his work on Leo Tregenza's earlier "Egyptian Years" (op) and updated and drew on Tregenza's accounts of life with the Bedu of the Eastern Desert of Egypt, between the Nile and the Red Sea.
Geographically, botanically, zoologically and anthropologically it is a fascinating book with all kinds of gems of information which are found nowhere else. It can be a little dry in places (no pun intended) hence the four stars rather than five but for those travelling in this arid, yet beautiful, region, it is well worth the effort.

Concise. Thorough. Thought-provoking. GREAT book! 13 Jan 2004
By Travis C. Ward - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover
Working in Egypt the last four years, plus 1986-1988, has given me opportunity and desire to learn every possible nuance within Egyptian society.

Bedouin Life has been one of the excellent sources of information and has helped shape how I see not only the desert dwellers, but how I see even myself.

Few books on this small segment of the population here are worth so much as one chapter of this fine book. Buy it but remember it is helpful most specifically in understanding an imperceptibly small group - do not for a minute think it describes even a small part of most Egyptians. We at LJ's Breaking Free$ are proud to recommend this book to all our friends - Bill Anderson.
