4.0 out of 5 stars Invaluable support, 25 Jan 2005

(REAL NAME)
I think this book is great. I bought it after becoming an inexperienced stepmother and feeling lost, confused and unhappy. By a few chapters in, I was going "yes, that makes sense; no wonder I feel like that - thank goodness it's normal!". Papernow's style is warm lucid, empathic and professional, and her attitude is to understand rather than to blame. My partner and I have, we hope, come through the hardest parts of early stepfamily life pretty quickly, and it's very much thanks to this book and similar resources.

'Becoming a Stepfamily' feels as if it's written for step-parents or for helping professionals. The book describes what frequently happens when a new stepfamily gets together, offers a "map" for identifying the common journeys that families make from getting together to staying there happily (or not), talks about the problems that *all* members of a stepfamily may encounter, and offers ways of naming problems and negotiating solutions that work for everyone.

For me, the two best parts of the book were the chapters on different family members' experiences of the different stages of family development, and the case studies of four different kinds of family development. Each case study tells a different "normal story" of how a stepfamily can develop: some work better, some work worse. I liked having such nice clear examples to avoid or to emulate, as well as the wealth of case study material throughout the book.

My only reservations are that if you're not happy to use Papernow's terminology, you'll get frustrated (so jump in and use it!); and maybe more about predictable annoying stepfamily occurrences would have been good. But basically, this book is full of detail, and incredibly helpful and reassuring in a common difficult situation.
