More About the Author

Karla McLaren is an award-winning author, social science researcher, and pioneering educator whose empathic approach to emotions revalues even the most "negative" emotions, and opens startling new pathways into the depths of the soul. Her website is karlamclaren.com.

She is the author of The Art of Empathy: A Complete Guide to Life's Most Essential Skill (2013), The Language of Emotions (2010), and the multi-media online course Emotional Flow (2012).

Karla has taught at such venues as the University of San Francisco, Omega Institute, Naropa University, Kripalu Center, and the Association for Humanistic Psychology. Additionally, as a prison arts educator with the William James Foundation, she has utilized singing, drumming, and drama to help men in maximum security prisons explore and heal long-held emotional traumas.

Karla is also a Certified Human Resource Administrator and a Certified Career Development Facilitator who helps people identify the emotion work they are expected to perform (or expect others to perform, perhaps without realizing it). When emotion work is brought out into the open and managed skillfully, individuals and businesses can avoid unnecessary conflict, burnout, and loss of productivity.

In her academic career, Karla served as a researcher and editor on the books When Killing is a Crime by Tony Waters, Ph.D, and Take Back Your Life: Recovering from Cults and Abusive Relationships by Janja Lalich, Ph.D.

With Dr. Lalich, Karla also co-authored a research study on the multiple stigmatizations that GLBTQ people experience in fundamentalist religions (Inside and Outcast: Multifaceted Stigma and Redemption in the Lives of Gay and Lesbian Jehovah's Witnesses).

A national Phi Kappa Phi honors scholar, Karla is now pursuing her masters in education and focusing her thesis on developing new forms of social interaction and empathy curricula for neurologically diverse people. She lives in Sonoma County, California.

5.0 out of 5 stars First Aid for Empaths 8 May 2003
Format:Audio Cassette
As an Empath this has been quite a personal experience as I have never seen any publications that address the issue of Empathic personalities. This really is the real thing, as any Empath would know. The audiobook comes with a leaflet taking you step by step through the tapes. At first I was a bit put off by the fact it was only available by audiobook, but after shutting myself away with it whilst relaxing in a bath i realised it is the best media for this subject, as it does feel more personal. Not only does it deal with reaching into yourself to find your natural ability, but it covers every aspect of life, from beginner to advanced level (as I now know as being Clairsentient)and also offers further devopment and advice with a website to support it.Karla does not claim to give you the answers, just shows you where to find them.

5.0 out of 5 stars How To Be Empathic While Remaining Balanced 12 April 2002
By Bruce Boatner - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio Cassette
Karla McLaren's workshop on tape is just about the right length, and presents about the right information at about the right depth. The idea of someone being or wanting to become an empath speaks volumes about that individual even before the first step is taken or the first idea is taught. If the meek are to inherit the Earth, you'll find a quorum here.
It has been said that the voice is the barometer of one's being, and if so Karla's is beautiful (in both respects). Here is the voice of experience, one who has taken her childhood wounds and used them as a vehicle to transcend the common mold, to become a butterfly rather than choosing to remain a victim.
Karla explains what an empath is and highlights the differences between clairvoyance, clairaudience and clairsentience. She explains the theory of the five elements of the human personality and presents a powerful working model for balancing the psyche. No part of the personality should be squelched because a person is "too sensitive". What really needs to be accomplished is the balancing of a dominant attribute by bolstering other aspects of the personality. (This portion of the tape alone is so interesting and useful that it could be considered a seminar in its own right.)
Karla teaches the inner skills of self knowledge, emotional agility and humility, and the importance of external support systems such as healthy relationships, good boundaries and the ability to create separations. She explains how to maintain a sense of personal space, of grounding and image releasing, and other skills necessary to protect against the energy overloading that may be associated with emotional over-exposure. She also teaches the skills of listening without projecting one's own judgements into the picture.
She talks about the primary emotions - anger, fear, sadness, depression and suicidal tendencies - their many and varied derivations and disguises, and shows that emotions are messengers, not problems. She exposes the awesome primal power that can be tapped into by communicating with the emotions and the deep insights they can yield, and provides the specific questions that should be asked in the presence of each emotion. Fantastic!
I think the word "skills" is the cornerstone of this seminar. It's all about learning how to handle situations with finesse, rather than force, and a bit of "by the book" is a nice balance to the obvious emotional predilection of the subject matter.

5.0 out of 5 stars Woo hoo! "Becoming An Empath" is not just for healers! 23 Sep 2000
By Meredith Childress - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio Cassette
Wondering how empathic you are? One thing for sure--you ARE empathic! With these tapes you can figure out if you use projection, mimicry or clairsentience when relating to others. Learning three internal skills, you can work from a place of wholeness. Learning emotional agility allows you to ask the right questions and move through emotions to healing. And learning three external skills cultivates and supports your empathic skills. Speaking of support, Karla says that empaths need the company of other empaths for understanding and exchange--and that includes your partner at home.
Karla also gives three steps to clear empathy that are important when helping others and maintaining yourself. And if you're like me, the advice to do some "conscious complaining" is pure joy!
The skills in the last session are some you've seen before if you've worked with Karla's tapes, but done this time in a different context. At the end, two Sufi meditations are suggested for those in conflict in close relationships.
These are powerful tapes! I highly recommend them to everyone, as we're all living on some empathic level. I love Karla's music, her voice, and her awe-inspiring connection with that misunderstood and neglected part of us--the emotions.

5.0 out of 5 stars So good I suggested it to my Best Friend! 31 Aug 2008
By Book Wormette - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
This CD was amazing! My only issue with it - is the title. I think a better title might have been " Being an Empath".

A great resource for those who are "feelers" or who just can't figure out what is up with that loved one who just seems to feel everything. I wish this CD had been around years ago! I am going to be sure to check out the rest of Karla McLaren's tapes/books after hearing this one!

5.0 out of 5 stars Mind-opening Perfect! 6 Sep 2010
By Yvonne Dardenne - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
This audio course was perfect for me - a budding, 'closet' empath. Ms. McLaren explained many things I've wondered about, broadened my understanding and awareness about things I've known, and gave wonderful, marvelous and practical training exercises for development of this natural ability we all have. Her personal energy radiated through her lovely voice. An 'audiobook' is the perfect method for transmitting her knowledge and wisdom. Bravo Karla, and Thanks!
