Because of Winn-Dixie is one of those films you happen to see that ends up being embedded in your memory, forever part of your favourite films list. I saw this on a plane literally only one day after losing my own dog, which was devastating. This movie came along just at the right time and was a wonderful comfort. But in retrospect, this is a genuinely great family film. The tone is very emotional, particularly when referencing Opal's mother. Winn-Dixie is one of those lovely fable animals that enters the life of someone in need of their presence and unconditional love.
Everyone in the cast really seemed to just go with it and find a common ground in terms of how it is played out - gently and with purpose.
And the soundtrack is a combination of lively south fun and bluegrassy melancholia.
If you're on the lookout for a film wearing its heart proudly on its sleeve, this little gem is very much worth checking out.
