Synopsis

Diane Keaton lights up the screen as an overbearing, matchmaking single mother in this slightly offbeat romantic comedy from director Michael Lehmann (HEATHERS, THE TRUTH ABOUT CATS AND DOGS). The film is a lot of fun, with both Keaton and Mandy Moore delivering energetic performances as a loveable and pretty believable mother-daughter team. After seeing two of her three stunning daughters (Piper Perabo, Lauren Graham) happily marry, Daphne Wilder (Keaton) focuses all her worries on Milly (Moore), her youngest, most insecure, and unlucky-in-love offspring. Twentysomething Milly has got her career as a chef figured out, but is clueless when it comes to love, attracting a never-ending slew of married, cheating, and closeted men. Taking matters into her own hands, Daphne places a personal ad for her daughter, interviewing the suitors herself and settling on one particularly promising young man named Jason. Meanwhile, clueless to her mother’s plans, Milly starts to fall for Johnny, a cute musician who in spite of treating Milly like gold, is hardly what Daphne has in mind for her daughter’s future. As Milly becomes increasingly involved with both men, Daphne must face whether maybe she could still have her own romantic life at age 60, instead of just living vicariously through her grown daughters.

2.0 out of 5 stars Only Watch It If You Are A Young Teenage Girl, 9 Oct 2007
By Laura (Worksop, Nottingham) - See all my reviews
I could see what was genuinely good about this film, it had all the elements of a chick flick; comedy, romance, drama, nice looking men..but it just didn't do anything for me. And why? because it felt too immature for me...way too immature and silly, and sometimes the comedy got really over the top and cringeworthy.
I didn't reckon much to the younger girls' acting, Mandy Moore used to be a singer and yet she was cast as a girl who liked to sing and could sing? somehow it seems wrong. I didn't reckon much to Diane Keaton either; I thought she was annoying.
I'd only recommend you watch this if you have nothing better to do and just want to watch an enjoyable piece of tosh. And also if you are a girl aged fourteen to sixteen. Otherwise, go for something more meaningful and mature

1.0 out of 5 stars dull dumb and dire, 4 Oct 2007

over acted, over baked, under populated with ideas or originality. Watch as good as it gets or any of the other movies in this category - this is a waste of time.

2.0 out of 5 stars "You shouldn't have to settle for crumbs", 12 Aug 2007
By Sebastian Fernandez (Tampa, Florida United States) - See all my reviews
(TOP 50 REVIEWER)
The quote from the movie, used in the title of this review, can also apply to potential viewers. If you are looking for a light comedy, do not settle for this and try to find one in which the writer was a little more creative and achieved the goal of entertaining us. I am not going to lie, when I decided to watch this I did not expect a masterpiece, but at least I was hoping to laugh a little and enjoy the time with my wife. The humor was so unoriginal and most of the performances so uninspired that the goal was not even close to being accomplished.

I felt tempted to not even comment on what the movie is about, but decided to treat this as a "normal" review anyway. Diane Keaton plays Daphne, the mother of three good looking young women. Two of the daughters have tied the knot, but Milly has not been able to find the right man for her. Daphne is focused on helping her daughter find Mr. Right. She has the horrendous idea of publishing a personal add without her daughter's consent, to triage candidates for Milly. During these interviews, Daphne finds a successful architect she thinks is a perfect fit. But as she is going through the process, a musician that was playing at the restaurant figures out what Daphne was doing and his interest was piqued. The two guys try to conquer Milly's love, and of course, they are as different from each other as two guys can be. You can probably guess the rest of the plot.

This is a really mind-numbing film, with pretty bad performances by most of the cast members. The only one that is fine in her role is Lauren Graham, who plays one Molly's sisters. Diane Keaton's performance is so over the top that it is hard to believe she is the same actress we have seen in other productions. You probably figured out my recommendation by now, but just in case, here it goes: Stay away from this film!
