Biography

For all the attention that was paid to her 2012 break-through Tramp, Sharon Van Etten is an artist with a hunger to turn another corner and to delve deeper, writing from a place of honesty and vulnerability to create a bond with the listener that few contemporary musicians can match. Compelled by a restless spirit, Van Etten is continuously challenging herself. Now, the result is Are We There, ... Read more in Amazon's Sharon Van Etten Store

Format: Audio CD
Sharon Van Etten comes from Brooklyn. She writes and sings songs.
She doesn't have the greatest voice on the planet and her guitar
playing is rudimentary (sometimes, truth-be-told, she hasn't even
taken the time to tune it properly!) but despite these self-evident
shortcomings there is something strangely captivating about her
album 'Because I Was In Love'. If you're after a jolly time you
will not find it here but with a little patience and an open mind
you may find much to enjoy in these stripped-down, melancholy
yet strangely compelling compositions.

Ms Van Etten has a folksy muse which is sensitively captured in
the studio with the help of Esper's Gregg Weeks behind the console.

There are eleven songs in the collection and they pretty much
adhere to the same formula throughout : strummed acoustic guitar
accompaniment, mournful central vocal line and simple two (or
occasionally three) part harmonies. Additional padding from electric
guitar, keyboards and rudimentary percussion crop up unobtrusively
from time to time but are never allowed to take centre stage.
This is a one woman show.

Her MySpace page lists a veritable hoard of influences. Her own
voice, however, possesses a curiously disctinctive quality all
its own. It has a hollow sound and her tendency to slide from
one note to the next (particularly evident on 'Tornado') can be
disconcertingly affecting at times, despite the almost total
absence of dynamic variation in her tone and delivery.

I particularly enjoyed the gently lilting 'Have You Seen' which
sports one of the strongest melodies on the album (The Roches
late 70's and early 80's work came to mind more than once).

a debut not to be ignored , SVE's music may come from a dark place, but it's real and has much gravitas throughout.

We saw her at a nice small venue and it was amazing. It's very emotional. I was afraid the recording wouldn't have the same drive; it does. For singer/songwriter folks, this is gold.

Sharon used to work at a cafe I frequented. She was always very kind and sweet. So I think her music represents her niceness very well. Good luck Sharon and stay lovely!

This is the first album I have ever reviewed. First off, all of SVEs albums are really, really, good. But for me this one sticks out head and shoulders above the others. The songs touch some deep subconscious chord it me. Its almost inexplicable. Same Dreams and Keep are my two favorites, but all the songs are absolutely great. For the past 40 years, Joni Mitchell's Blue has been my all time favorite album, but this one is really close, and in some ways even better. A must have for anyone who wants their sole touched.

It would be nice gift 23 May 2010

First I met that album in a blog with 'For you' track. And then I began to figure out Sharon Van Etten -in interviews, video clips... So first I purchased album as mp3. After that, I lay down my bed and listened to all album from the beginning. It reminded me a girl who lives in town where I live as a foreign student. So I decided to buy it to keep it, or if I saw that girl again and I met, may be simply I'd share it with her before going to my country for holiday.

Ms. Van Etten is a gifted and soulful folk singer and songwriter. I especially like the haunting "Much More than That." She has a bright and unlimited future.
