Amazon Review

Because a Fire Was in My Headis a stunning collection of poems for children, written specifically to fire the imagination. With poems from authors as diverse as Spike Milligan, Stevie Smith, Lewis Carroll and John Lennon, each verse has been selected with the intent to set sparks flying through the combination of subject matter, rhythm and pace, each of them begging to be read out loud and remembered forever.

Selected by Micheal Morpurgo and illustrated by Quentin Blake, this lovely book encourages young readers to give free reign to their thoughts and feelings, inspiring even the most reluctant of readers to pick up the book and let their imaginations take centre stage. This is a brilliant, amazing kids poetry book that will foster a love of rhyme and poetry in most children. I spent a long time looking for a really good children's poetry book and eventually stumbled across this one in the Tate Modern shop. Wonderful, varied selection of classic poems, and not all obvious 'kiddies' choice i.e there are 3/4 Yeats poems, which my kids love as they are so lyrical (and actually quite easy to learn off by heart). Very highly recommended.

This is a truly splendid anthology, chosen by the excellent Michael Morpurgo and with tremendous illustrations from Quentin Blake. It will reach out to children of a wide range of different ages and introduce them to some wonderful poems.

Some in the selection offer simply light-hearted fun, more are well worth returning to over and over. There are plenty of indifferent anthologies cashing in on the latest fad. Here, the words of the publishers about learning the difference between the genuine and the shoddy are borne out in the words of gifted poets, whose work has withstood the test of time. There are some outstanding individual pieces here from Shakespeare to Dylan Thomas, Robert Frost and so many more. As with all good books for children, this one affords great delight to adults as well. I look forward to reading them all with my grand-daughter, who is sure to respond with enthusiasm.

The combination of Morpurgo and Blake was irresistible. Light and dark, funny and sad. I bought another copy, for my Dad.
