This is the lads' very underrated second album. Apparently they turned down a few big-name US producers (including Don Was) to helm it themselves, and some might say they could have done with a slightly tighter quality control check, but for my money this more than justifies the potential of the debut album.

Imaginary Girl, Loneliness and The Ballad of Shirley MacLaine are simply fantastic songs taking Sinatra as their starting point, while Never Gonna Be The Same, If Everything You Said Was True and Goodbye Shanty Town are in the Steely Dan style. Charlie Biz suggests the lads were listening to Prince's Lovesexy with its synth bass and heavy lead guitar, while Second Summer of Love is a folk pastiche with chiming 12-string guitars (and the only big hit from the album). Slightly less successful are Kit Clark's I Can't Wait and the irritatingly shambolic NYC Shanty, but no matter; they can't stop this from being a first-class album with songs that are built to last.

This is a great album with some fantastic Gary Clark songs.

It's just a pity Virgin - or whoever now own the rights - can't be bothered to release a remastered version with all the bonus songs which featured on the various 10"; 12" & CD singles that were released at the time.

The sound quality on the CD is way below par and it appears that they've recorded straight off the original vinyl album. (I kid you not!) You can hear where the album runs off at the end of side one and the needle going onto the record for the start of side 2. Check it out with your headphones on.

Pity really because Gark Clark has never released a duff record in his life. All of his group and solo recordings are worth picking up from Danny Wilson to King L to Transister.

The musical maestro from Dundee.

This item was on a wish list for a relative I wanted to buy a gift for. All I can say is that my order arrived quickly, well wrapped and the contents undamaged.
