Exceptional 25 Feb. 2004
By Jazzcat - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
Fantastic bebop album from Milt. This one was released in 1988 forty years after the birth of bebop to tribute the genius of this music and of its creators Parker, Gillespie, Monk, Christian and Milt himself who was among the best of them all at the time. This album is simply superlative. The line up consists in Milt at the vibraharp, Jon Faddis, the Dizzie Gillespie alumn at the trumpet, JJ Johnson at the trombone, Jimmy heath tenor sx, Cedar Walton (the maestro!!) at the piano, John Clayton at the doublebass, Mickey Roker drums. The tunes are all fast bebop numbers from the era, Ornithology, Au privave, bebop blueses and anatolls from Parker's, Gillespie's, Dameron's pens. In the end of the selection the band play a stellar version of I" waited for you", a marvellous bebop ballad. It's simply pefect in the tune selection too. What can I say more? Uh, yes, the album is perfectly recorded .. it is a bebop album without the limits of the forties in the recording step. So it is a must have. The emphasis of the music is just right, just perfect. Solos are wonderful. I really love this album.

Milt and J.J. Cook 12 Jan. 2012
By Walter J. Jamieson Jr. - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
This CD presents an excellent session with which I wasn't familiar. The selections of tunes is pure Bop, as the title says, as are the players, even though some of them are from the second or third generation of the style. Most outstanding are the soloists Jackson himself and J.J. Johnson, both of them in excellent form. Jackson, a natural genius of the highest caliber, amazes as always. Johnson reminds us with every solo of the great trombone legacy he left to those who came after him. Heath's solos are good without being exceptional or particularly original, and I would guess that he shared the writing of the arrangements, such as they are, with Johnson. To my own taste, the false notes here are provided by Faddis. He starts his solos interestingly, quoting Parker's first chorus on "Now's the Time" for example, but quickly goes into his stratispheric squealing high-note shtick and shameless copying of Dizzy, spoiling the strongly melodic thread established by the others. I would have preferred another trumpet player, not a soloist perhaps, maybe one who just played the trumpet parts in the heads. Although Faddis detracts from many of the tracks for me personally, I can't say it's serious enough to take more than one star away from what is otherwise an exemplary recording. The rhythm section is swinging. Highly recommended.
one of the finest bebop albums ever made 13 July 2011

First off, let me say that I am a jazz fan who favors the bebop sound. Milt Jackson (Bags) is most well known for his work in the famous "Modern Jazz Quartet"

The MJQ had a long independent career of some 20 years until disbanding in 1974, when Jackson split with Lewis, partially in an attempt to make more money on his own and more likely because he sought the improvisational freedom he once enjoyed. However, the group reformed in 1981 and continued until 1993, after which Jackson toured alone, performing in various small combos, though not saying no to periodic MJQ reunions, either.

This album, & there are samples of every tune on the site has been a mainstay in my huge jazz collection for years.

If I had to name a fav on the album (put a gun to my head) it would be "Au Privave" written by Charle Parker (Bird). That's the first bebop tune on an album that features not only some of the best bebop tunes ever written, but a group of musicians like Jon Faddis (T); J.J. Johnson (T-Bone); Jimmy Heath (tenor sax); Cedar Walton (P) in a septet.

If you like jazz at all, & bebop in particular, just get it!
Great Music but missing bonus track 25 Sept. 2008
By James V. Cimarusti - Published on Amazon.com

Thank you to Collectables for reissuing this CD but they forgot to include the bonus track "I Waited For You". Why this was left off is unknown. Collectables did the same thing with their reissue of "For Ellington" by the Modern Jazz Quartet (also originally released on East/West Records) by not including the bonus track of "Come Sunday". Hopefully, it can be included in future issues of the CD. Otherwise, check the original issue of this material for it.
It says BeBop and that is what you will get! 23 Mar. 2014

Milt Jackson has always been one of my favorite vibes musicians along with Lionel Hampton and Bobby Hutcherson. So this collection was a "must get" for me. IMHO, this would be another great way to introduce BeBop to anyone interested in Jazz. It still sounds very fresh to these ears. The list of musicians on the collection reads like a who's who of the Jazz world and is a real treat to hear them all on one disc. Buy it. You won't be disappointed.
