I loved this book! The classic story 'Beauty and the Beast' is my favourite of all time and this re-telling didn't disappoint. I found the book easy to understand and my only complaint is that I never wanted it to end.
When Beauty's father - a rich and wealthy merchant - goes into ruin, the family have to leave the city they grew up in and move to a small village in the country. One day, their father recieves a letter telling him of one of his ships that had returned to port with some items that could be sold to pay off his debts, so he sets off for the city once more alone. some months later, when the winter begins to begins to turn into spring, he leaves to return to his family, but is caught in a snow storn in the middle of a deep and dark forest. However, he carries on walking, hoping to find some shelter and stumbles upon a mysterious and apparently enchanted castle which offers him refuge for a night. The next morning Beauty's father takes one simple rose before he leaves to take home to his youngest daughter - Beauty. At once a great monster can be heard roaring throughout the entire castle. The beast threatens to kill the old merchant unless he delivers on of his daughters to him in the next month. When their father finally returns home, he tells his family about his horrible ordeal, but refuses to allow eiher of his three daughters to be taken to this beast and plans to return alone to face the wrath of the monster. Of course, Beauty offers to go in his place and, although her father puts up a fair argument, they both set off at the and of the month.
I don't want to reveal much more, but I have to say that I couldn't put this book down and i finshed it the day after i bought it - I probably would have finished it sooner if I didn't have to sleep!
