Synopsis

What every beauty queen really wants is world peace, but isn't it just a dream for bikini-clad airheads? Terrorist attacks, the war in Iraq and weapons of mass destruction make world peace seem further away than ever. How can it be achieved? In this groundbreaking and controversial new book Dan Plesch - one of the few Britons ever to provide expert evidence on military issues to the US Senate and House of Representatives - tackles the question head-on with characteristic wit and intelligence. Exposing the new military-industrial complex that has prospered under President Bush, Plesch argues that there can be no military solution to terrorism: world peace requires an economic and political revolution founded on the principles of democracy and human rights. In The Beauty Queen's Guide to World Peace he uses a wealth of historical evidence alongside economic and political theories by everyone from Karl Marx to Adam Smith and an unrivalled command of the facts about military conflict in the twenty-first century to make a powerful case against the warmongers and a provide compelling blueprint for peace.

A good starting point 30 Nov 2004
By tomsk23
I decided to take this book on holiday with me to learn more about the terrible state we have got ourselves into in the so-called civilised world. I found it to be a well structured book, split between several interesting topics (war, oil, politics etc). This gives the reader an excellent introduction into these issues without subjecting them to an in depth 'text book' style read that would take much longer too digest. In comparison, this book is much more readable, whilst still remaining informative (and sufficiently thought-provoking).

100% recommended read for those looking to stop the rot before it's too late - I know it helped me.......

I wish I'd had this in school! 9 Feb 2005
By Susannah - Published on Amazon.com
Its a fun practical readable and optimistic take on how to solve the major problems in the world. And right now we need some optimism! It really helped me make sense of the world and told me loads of stuff that I never knew about terrorism, WMDs, democracy, the Second World War, the UN, Corporate Law and Renewable Energy. All those politics and international relations classes would have made so much more sense- and Plesch even made me laugh. I could not agree more with Jason Burke, the Al Qaeda expert, who said that Bush and Blair ought to read this book. I doubt they will, but you should.

The great game of transnational politics. 23 Jan 2006
By Eigil Skallagrimson - Published on Amazon.com
Dan Plesch's book is without a doubt one of the most intelligently written summaries of the current world situation vis a vis international politics and 'the Great Game'. As the author states, we are children in the eyes of our political leaders, and there are many facts that they hide from us on a daily basis. Dan Plesch is there to open our eyes and wake us up; it is time for people to start making more of an effort to positively influence the political systems that rule us and the social system that we live in. A wise book that explains clearly and succinctly what's Really Going On.

Interesting... 30 Mar 2005
By MBW - Published on Amazon.com
I enjoyed this book. It behooves us to search for lessons from the past, which this book provides in a dose that is very relevant.

My primary complaint would be the number of distracting grammar or other minor errors which detract from the overall thrust of the book. Who's this shoe bomber, Richard Read? Is he related to Richard Reid? I re-read a few sentences only to realise they were missing a word here or there.

I'm no grammar fiend, but it's annoying enough that I picked up a pen to start editing this book.
