Book Description

10 Nov 2011
Throughout her career, supermodel and actress Carre Otis has been celebrated for her physical beauty, but in her brazenly honest memoir she revisits the ugliest part of her past to reveal the events that ultimately brought her to the kind of beauty that can only be found within. Talking candidly about her struggles to overcome sexual exploitation, drug and alcohol addictions, an eating disorder, a notorious film role, her infamously abusive marriage to Academy Award Nominee Mickey Rourke, and at the core of it all, her submission to a culture obsessed with image, this book is a gift to women of all ages, most especially her own coming-of-age daughters.

About the Author

CARRE OTIS has had one of the most celebrated and controversial careers in the history of the modeling industry. Born and raised in the San Francisco Bay Area, she achieved fame as both a model and an actress, headlining runway shows around the world and serving as the face of long-running campaigns for both Guess and Calvin Klein. Her film role as Emily Reed in 1989's Wild Orchid opposite her future husband, Mickey Rourke, brought her considerable fame and notoriety. Her marriage to Rourke was characterized by intense abuse and violence, widely covered in the press. Despite struggling with an eating disorder and drug addiction, Carre continued to enjoy great success as a model during and after her relationship with Rourke. Today, Carre lives with her husband Matthew and two young daughters in Colorado. A long-time student of spirituality and Buddhist practice, Carre has reached a place of profound peace-and an enduring commitment to transforming the business of beauty, a business that brought her both great success and great pain. --This text refers to the Paperback edition.

I liked this, I looked at reviews and it put me off at first then I though no give it a chance, glad I did. She really let you in had nothing to hide .
I really found it interesting. If you are interested in the Mickey Rouke it certainly told you about him and the problems they both had.
Well worth a read.

1.0 out of 5 stars Self Indulgent 20 Jan 2012

I would not recommend this book. The entire book was self indulgent and the author clearly wrote it out of self pity. Very boring, i had to really push myself to even finish it.

3.0 out of 5 stars Three stars 20 Nov 2012

I've recently finished the biograpy Beauty, Disrupted: A Memoir by Carre Otis. To be honest I really don't know much about her or her modelling career, I mostly checked it out because people were saying it gave a lot of insight into her relationship with Mickey Rourke. I'd heard in the unofficial biograpy for Mickey Rourke that she was supposedly the love of Mickey's life and he never got over losing her, yet you didn't get much love from him at all in Carre's account which surprised me. He seemed taken with her at first and they had an intense relationship, but very soon after the filming of Wild Orchid wraps up she talks about having to beg him to spend any time with her, he basically left her isolated in a house by herself for ages and he was constantly sleeping around with a string of women. The two of them even had separate bedrooms and, towards the end of their relationship, she tells us they hadn't made love in a year

The only time he seemed to show much passion for her was when she was threating to leave him (he actually holds a gun to her head at one point), or when he was threatening the people who worked with her and threatening her friends. He even tapped all the phones in the house and had all these people following her around to keep an eye on her, warning her to "be a good girl" ick. She doesn't really dwell on the domestic violence as much, you get the feeling it was definitely the mental side of it that she struggled with more, feeling trapped and isolated when he orders her to turn down jobs and concentrate fully on him

Regarding the rest of the book, I must admit that the chapters on her spiritual side didn't really interest me much, just not my thing I suppose. But I found myself genuinally moved by her stories of her early entry into the modelling world, it really is a much more sordid place than I had ever realised. I gave the book three stars because, even though I originally only brought it to read the dirt on Mickey, the rest of her story still mostly grabbed me and was interesting to read about
