this book is everything you could hope for if you are (as i am) obsessed with good looking les pauls.

it basically scans like a playboy calendar that runs for about two hundred pages. i love it!

the guitars in this book must have a combined value of millions and millions, which is awesome - the best thing is that they were all made by a small team 50 years ago to be working instruments played by normal people.

even though these particular guitars are destined to be the next Stradivariuses (god, that's a clumsy plural!), and most people will never see (let alone touch or play) one of these guitars, this book makes you feel that little bit closer to that crazy 36ish month period when musical history and future history was being made.

I'm 30 now, and i'll be seeing these guitars and their sisters turn up in the hands of great players for my entire life, and they'll continue to be around and played long after i'm gone. this book makes me feel that bit better about my own mortality, and the immortality of these incredible instruments.

This is hands down the best book on 58'-60' 'Bursts there is. Tons of info, gobs of gorgeous photos...you name it...its' all here and then some. Price is also fair, for what you get...quite alot. This book completly documents 50 or so sunbursts with a front shot, back, close-up front and back head stock shot, and an angled shot of the top that best highlights the flame. All specs are recorded on each example (nut width, weight, etc,) If you have any other Burst books (Vic Dapras'and a couple other come to mind)you must get this one. Its' as good as it gets(so far)

5.0 out of 5 stars Ultimate Guitar Porn 24 Feb 2008

Having recently bought a 59 'burst VOS I was curious to find how close Gibson had nailed it this time round. The book not only gives you loads of beautifully photographed '58, '59 and '60 Standards, but an incredibly detailed run-down on the exact dimensions, aging process, woods etc. Since the book was researched and published (in 1999) the price of the burst has risen to heights unattainable to normal, earth-bound citizens becoming the investment of choice for 50-something investment bankers and mega-rich mega-stars... shame. By the way, I think the guy with 14 of them should be ashamed of himself (I wonder how many he has now...?).

5.0 out of 5 stars Every Les Paul fan MUST own this! 12 July 2014
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
Pure, unmitigated guitar porn. Page after page of gratuitous shots of gorgeous guitars in alluring poses, beautifully photographed from several angles. There's a bit of text about each one but it's really all about the pictures.

There is a good bit of technical detail in the back, so for a guitar maker like me it's a useful reference, too.

The book itself has become a bit of a legend, and is pretty much the standard reference for burst enthusiasts. People even build replicas named after the page number the original guitar appears on.

This is a lovely and completely pointless book, which is utterly essential for any Les Paul fan. To everyone else it's a boring book of identical pictures of the same guitar. If I have to explain, you won't understand.
