excellent!,

This review is from: Beauty and the Beast (Audio CD)
This soundtrack brings back memories from the brilliantly performed play. If you have not seen the play, the soundtrack will make you want to! The album includes the much loved 'be our guest' and the title track ( and my personal favourite!) 'beauty and the beast'. This album is just as good as the original american soundtrack, and deserves 5 stars! Even if you just like orchestrial music, this is for you. The timing of the instruments is incredible. BUY IT!

Measures up to the Original Broadway Cast,
This review is from: Beauty and the Beast (Audio CD)
I am a college student majoring in music composition and have always been a musical theatre fan. I consider Beauty and the Beast the definitive Disney classic, and the musical does not disappoint. The new songs perfectly blend with the existing ones to nicely round out the story (unlike the wretched Lebo M. additions to Broadway's Lion King). This recording is every bit as good as the Original Broadway Cast, and in some ways it surpasses it. The sound engineering is phenomenal, especially the brass! Watch for it on "If I Can't Love Her." The extra musicians for the recording were worth it! I do like British accents, but I found Belle's to be a little too not-so-refined for the role. Especially the "I love you" at the end. It's partially the sound engineer's fault (his only foible on this otherwise fantastic sounding orchestral romp), but if you don't listen too carefully, it comes out as "I wuv you," spoiling the magic of the moment. My apologies to Terry Mann fans, but I liked Alasdair Harvey better as the Beast. Don't misunderstand, I like Terrence Mann too, but his stage presence must be overwhelming for him to continue to land such major parts when there are hordes of more qualified singers around. Alasdair provides a slightly more robust singing voice (one that you would expect from a Beast). Oh, and the final treat, for those who like to compare recordings, is the narrator. David Ogden Stiers didn't do the opening narration (as he did for the film and the OBC), the honor goes to Barry James (who plays the London Cogsworth). Again, I love Stiers' rendition, but it was interesting to hear something different, and James did a most commendable job (redeeming himself from his only passable Thenardier on the Les Miz CSR). I am still undecided on how the title song measures up to Beth Fowler's version on the OBC. Burke Moses competently reprises his role as Gaston (though I'd like to hear Hugh Jackman's takes from the Australian recording) and the rest of the cast is competent and professional. If you don't own any copy of B&TB, this is a must, and if you've already got the OBC, I consider it a valuable companion for the sake of the occasional variation to keep yourself from getting sick of it (is there anyone else out there who NEVER wants to hear Michael Crawford and Sarah Brightman in Phantom again?). For cast album collectors, however, this is an absolute gem! Especially if you're a fan of lyric variations!
