About the Author

Michael Morpurgo OBE is one of Britain’s best-loved writers for children. He has written over 100 books and won many prizes, including the Smarties Prize, the Blue Peter Book Award and the Whitbread Award. His recent bestselling novels include Shadow, An Elephant in the Garden and Born to Run.

Michael’s stories have been adapted numerous times for stage and screen, most recently with the phenomenally successful National Theatre production of War Horse, which is also currently playing on Broadway. The story is now the subject of a major forthcoming film directed by Steven Spielberg.

Michael was the UK’s Children’s Laureate from 2003 to 2005, a role which took him all over the country to inspire children with the joy of reading stories.

Loretta Schauer has always had a passion for drawing and creativity, and honed her illustration skills through evening classes. In addition to her illustration, she works for Heath Hands, a charity dedicated to conservation and horticulture.

Loretta lives in Highgate, North London with her husband Peter and their hamster, Eduardo.

Format: Paperback
We borrowed this book from the library for my 5 year old daughter, who totally loved it. Belle's father is a wealthy Italian merchant whose ship gets hijacked by pirates so that they become poor overnight and have to move to the mountains to raise sheep and pigs. The rest of the story follows the known plot of Beauty and the Beast as we know it, I would say however that the book is original, a refreshing change from the Disney version and that the illustrations are very beautiful too.

Lovely illustrations and straightforward text. I had no idea Michael Morpurgo had re-written this tale until I spotted it on Amazon.
