About the Author
Max Eilenberg is the author of the children's picture books Cowboy Kid, illustrated by Sue Heap, and Squeak's Good Idea, illustrated by Patrick Benson. Working as a publisher and editor, Max lives in London with his family. Angela Barrett is the highly-regarded illustrator of the 1989 Smarties Book Prize-winning Can It Be True?, by Susan Hill, and the 1991 WH Smith Illustration Award-winning The Hidden House, by Martin Waddell. She lives in London.

This book is spectacular. I read it to my nine year old (who's well into reading her own novels by now) and we both were moved to tears -- not a regular occurrence in this household. Max Eilenberg's retelling of the classic tale is dark and emotional and very moving, and Angela Barrett's illustrations are nothing short of breathtaking. Can't recommend this highly enough for 6-10s. So different from all the jazzy tongue in cheek 'aren't we cool' books out there. This is the real thing.

I read this to my 5 year old, we were spellbound by the fantastic pictures. In particular the two page painted picture of the beasts palace. Every page holds beautifully illustrated pictures with a dark quality that just grabs your attention. I found it difficult to contain my emotion within the story because it is so movingly written, in the end I just wept!! My daughter and I looked at each other with tears in our eyes and of course then laughed! but we had both been caught in the magic. What an amazing book the best version of Beauty and the Beast I have read an absolute pleasure to read again and again and thankfully nothing like the Disney version!

A beautiful book that combines a unique twist on the well known story. Beautifully image led by magical and mysterious illustrations with a dark but charming edge by Angela Barrett. This version of Beauty and the Beast is unforgettable, a modern day classic that I can imagine being a favourite for decades to come. Add it to your collection.

One of the best children's books I have ever owned
I can't begin to describe how beautiful this book is. I use it with my year 2 class and they are as enchanted as I am.

Brilliant - don't think twice about whether to get it
I had the most wonderful time with my daughter reading this book, it was a 7th year birthday present. So many fairy tales are just soul-less retellings, but this is not. Read more
