A Delight Of The German Bel Canto School 25 Jun. 2013
By James S. Eisenberg - Published on
Format: Audio CD Verified Purchase
Spohr, once considered to be among the principal composers of the early 19th century, and still much admired for some of his orchestral works and concerti, remains a delightful creator of melodies, harmonies and orchestration. His operas, mostly in the Singspiel tradition, are simple of dramatic and musical structure. ZEMIRE UND AZOR, his take on the Beauty and the Beast story, after Perrault and other sources couldn't be lovelier. It is full of sincere emotion and good tunes. (Sutherland's very first recording included Zemire's Act I aria.) He is also able to build some degree of suspense in the interactive numbers.
The Albany Records/Manhattan School Of Music collaboration, of releases of MSM's annual productions has led to several recordings of important rare and modern repertoire.
If there is more enthusiasm than perfection here, the student singers are really quite good and approach their characterizations with appropriate sincerity.
The orchestra, under Christopher Larkin, is first rate.
A lot of opera companies these days use the expedient in works with spoken dialogue of performing the musical numbers in the original language while doing the dialogue in English. I find this distracting and frustrating. For integrity's sake one language or the other should be chosen for the entire work.
The sound recording is excellent, there are good liner notes and a full text.
