Product Description

CD Description

Take one heaped teaspoon of Seasick Steve, a liberal helping of Catfish Keith, a pinch of Joni Mitchell. Finish well with a dusting of Blind Willie McTell and put into a studio at gas mark 5. Bake for one week. What you get is an eclectic pie with so many flavours that perhaps shouldn t work together but just do ! Both artists have vast experience behind them and have been able to gently influence each other without taking control. The variety of this recording is refreshing and the excitement comes from a sense that this is just the start of what is destined to be a large brood of musical offspring. The blending of pre war hill country and delta blues with early Australian folk and traditional Celtic styles has produced a truly unique sound and has enhanced their reputation as one of the world s most interesting and musically appealing combinations.

About the Artist

The Legend of FitzMulholland Our tale begins over seven generations ago in a place once known as Eire. Twas the early 1800's that Robert Fitzpatrick, the son of a poor but honest stonemason was sentenced to a life time of hard labour in recently colonised Sydney, Australia. His crime, the theft of a duck. These were indeed desperate times. Not only was he forced to leave his homeland but also the one great love of his life, a fair maiden from the foot of the Mountains of Mourne, Ruby Mulholland. Carrying only a small hessian sack and a lock of Ruby's long red hair he was lead away in chains to Belfast harbour and taken to London, eventually setting sail in October, 1800, bound for Botany Bay. Records from that period are not clear as to what may have happened to him on that journey but, alas Robert did not arrive in New South Wales. Ruby knew in her heart of hearts however that one day they would be reunited and it is said that she never gave up hope of holding her man again. Fast forward and the year is 2008, the setting, Larry Roddy's Castlebar Blues Festival in County Mayo, Ireland. Upon advice from his colleague Sinclair, Hat Fitz a regular performer at Byrne's bar makes his way to Cara Robinson's show at the TF hall and is instantly mesmerised. Likewise she also feels a strong connection although it would be many hours of deep conversation before they realise that destiny has brought them together again, for they are the descendants of Robert and Ruby, and as such the legend of the FitzMulholland is born. A Celtic myth ? A true story ? You be the judge.

Nude Blues 19 Dec 2011
By Glenn TOP 1000 REVIEWER
Format:Audio CD
Delta Blues in the nude. Well, that's the cover's innuendo, but in reality the relevance is that much is stripped back, basic foot-stomping blues, or Celtic folk, and fine for that. Opener 'Black Cat Bone' sets one tone with slide guitar, simple drumming, and dual harmonising. Hat Fitz plays a mean, screaming harmonica and has the vocal of Seasick Steve about him, or vice versa - it's a generic hard blues calling. The sweeter antidote to Fitz's Aussie appropriation of dirtblues is heard in the pretty flute and Irish drumming of partner and wife Cara Robinson on instrumental 'Fitzmullolland'. This more melodic alternative is also presented in fourth track 'Where It All Began' where Cara sings prettily and is accompanied by fiddle. The album moves between these differences, but gets merged, for example, on sixth track 'Nobody's Fault But Mine' where Fitz plays a calm, seductive and electric blues slide and Cara sings in a pure and beautiful voice. 'Lay Me Down' with acoustic slide and Cara's vocal is gorgeous. It's a neat combination.

I went to around 10 folk festivals last summer ranging in size from Dent to Cambridge. Never even heard of this duo before , never mind seen. Enjoyed more than anybody else I saw all year and went down a storm (at Southwell). Some great Delta slide blues playing but what makes this two different (apart from being a hairy Aussie and a N Ireland beauty) is the latter clearly steeped in more traditonal Irish music...she sits aside snare drums whilst accompanying on flute or singing or playing the washboard ..and what complementing voices! She is really a great singer, one number reminded me of Bessie Smith. And it all comes over on the CD..it's unbelievable the sound from just two of them (with some added backing on the CD). Hard edged slide blues with a beat and a growling voice to match (Fitz) to soaring Cara....and a nice couple two, had a chat about his slide playing. Had glass one made for him with metal strips. Only thing is I paid them £10 for this CD, a mixture of trad (such as Nobody's Fault but Mine) to their own material. Highly recommended.
