Product Description

While Edan s critically acclaimed debut, Primitive Plus , was a celebration of Hip-hop s golden age and a true throwback, his sophomore album, Beauty And The Beat , is a vast musical collage that contains many different influences; Hip-hop, rock, pop, dusty breaks, hazy loops, luxurious off-kilter samples and curveball tempo changes that are all crafted into one cohesive piece of art. Edan s vast lyrical imagination and technical wizardry (he also self-produced every track) alone make Beauty And The Beat a standout. The album s lead-single Fumbling Over Words That Rhyme , a track which true Hip-hop enthusiasts and historians will not only appreciate, but ultimately debate is a perfect sample of what Beauty And The Beat has to offer. Smile is a gripping behind the scenes look at a successful yet internally tormented star. Promised Land - the symbolism of imagination and its power to overcome all that is perilous with positivity, patience and understanding show how Edan has progressed both artistically and as an individual. Check out Rock And Roll for a heavy hitting beat and Torture Chamber for amazing mic skills. Features Mr Lif (Def Jux) , Percee P (Stones Throw), Dagah and Insight US pressed thick vinyl in shrink wrapped old style 60 s heavy card jacket

A good follow up from Primitive Plus by one of the best underground MCs around. Where as he is not quite as leftfield in this album as he was in the last, it is far more accessable to the casual listener and features some excellent guests (Mr. Lif and Insight really shine).
Doesn't quite warrant 5 stars due to some indifferent tracks and it lacks the edge that made Primitive Plus so original. Having said that, it's still miles better than 99% of the competition and he deserves to reach a wider audience.

Wow, now this is as fresh, if not fresher, as Primitive Plus when it first came out, Edan displays the advancement of his production and rhyme skills, showing indefinite maturity and alot of progression since primitive plus, the guest appearences of Mr Lif, Insight, Dagha, Segue and of course, the legendary Percee P compliment the tracks more than enough, adding that little bit of extra depth to give this album the edge in hip hop. Im pushing Beauty and The Beat for the Hip Hop album of 2005. Nuff said.

Conceptual compelling, a purple ohm tinged stew, bubbling with multicoloured chunks of breaks, synths and prog rock samples from yesteryear. This is no ordinary hip hop album ...yes! This is Mr Edan portnoys beauty and the beat, follow up to the acclaimed indie debut primitive plus...and boy oh boy, it doesn't disappoint. Gone are the crusty, raw, bedroom beats, surreal yet humorous rhymes, that made prim plus stand out from the average b-boy crowd that made edan a credible force within the indie hip hop community. in its place Edans sound and lyrics have now matured, evolved, metamorphasied even into an altogether different beast. Every track on beauty and the beat is a skilfully orchestrated collage, crafted expertly and with great care from a variety of different genres, breaks and whirring sounds that bombards the auditory senses with such effect it should be classified as a class A substance, bottled, distributed and spoonfed to the miserable. Infuse this with Dr Edans P.H.D in incredible, psychotropic verbal dexterity that would leave most commercial rappers dazed confused while stretched out in pathology desperately reaching out for a dictionary. You have an album here that breaks from the norm. One thing is evident something that manifests itself in this album, and, that is edans love of music not just hip hop (edan makes many references to the past masters of rhyme) but music in general, something that he has studied and cultivated, that comes out in his production. His ability to blend and mix sounds borders on the genius a word often touted about undeservedly these days.Read more ›
