The album rightfully earns the four stars that i gave it, it reconciles a great form of music for your ears to feel.
Obviously it lacks that little something extra to make it an all out 5 stars, but only a future classic is in that band.
Weapon is the best, and most standout track by Matthew Good Band.
An advised purchase for any fan of the music that is mellow to a tee, but also has it's guitars still plying their trade.
"Beautiful Midnight" [1999] is indeed the darkest of the band's three LPs, (Last of the Ghetto Astronauts [1995], Underdogs [1997]) and covers issues like suicide (I Miss New Wave), alcoholism (Jenni's Song), and mental illness (A Boy and His Machine Gun). The album would be intensely depressing if it wasn't for the peppering of radio-friendly songs like "Load Me Up" (which spent several weeks at #1 on the MuchMusic countdown) and "Giant", which features the services of the Centennial High School cheerleading team.
That intensity, though, brings an aura of joy while allowing us to focus on the problems that plague us. More or less, the album should not be taken literally but rather used as a device to chill and listen to. Spending too much time on the hidden meaning of these tracks will be a short lived chore. Just enjoy the music.
In my opinion "Load Me Up" is the best track on the album, but certainly not the band's best song. I say this not because it was a North American hit, but the fact that the song serves as basis for all MGB fans. It is also quite fun to listen and sing along to. The album's other hit "Hello Time Bomb" has that quality as well; it is easy to listen to and participate in the song. Listeners may breeze over the softer tracks like "Strange Days" and "I Miss New Wave" at first. After the album's faster, more distorted songs lose their gleam the softer tracks on the album provide a safety net with a beautiful backdrop.
Although "Beautiful Midnight" may not be considered the band's best work it is a great way to start your Matthew Good Band Collection. I personally enjoy the "Raygun EP" and prefer "Underdogs" to the new album....
"Beautiful Midnight" can not be summed up in a word or a quote. One that does catch my eye is from the "Lofi (low fidelity) B-Sides" EP that was released before "Midnight". In "Fated" Matt sings "I long to be dead and sleep with the fishes under the sea...they could swim through my head and stop all the traffic jams". The aim of the record was not to be a blockbuster success or a "Radio Shacked", overplayed jam. It is a wonderful collection of mixed emotions that capture the mind and envelop the heart with warmed sadness. I strongly recommend listening to Matthew Good Band if you enjoy this genre of music. You will not be disappointed with the delivery of this band.
