Beautiful Malice is your classic, escapist novel, with twists and turns at nearly every corner. Its lead character, Katherine Patterson, is a quiet girl who moves to a new town and new school her senior year of high school. When she meets outspoken, beautiful and manically complicated Alice Parrie, her attempts at remaining anonymous and coasting through her final year of high school are entirely thwarted. Her past carries a dark secret that she is trying to put behind her but despite her efforts, the past keeps coming back to haunt her.
The book's author, Rebecca James, does a brilliant job creatinging demons and villains that test Katherine as she comes to terms with what happened to her family, and what exactly her part in that situation was.
I was slightly disappointed by the fact that the characters don't seem to be as deeply developed and explored as they otherwise could be. Alice, at times, seems a caricature and Katherine wishy woshy, not necessarily someone I could identify with or sympathise with. The beginning of the novel is also slightly slowed down by the fact that Katherine (as the narrator) keeps reminding us that she is trying to hide a dark secret. It gets a bit tedious until Alice's character turns half way through the novel and the mystery of what it is that drives her to be so scary creates the suspense. And the ending makes the whole read worthwhile, you will not be disappointed! In short, this isn't classic literature in any sense of the word, but it will certainly entertain you as you discover how beautiful and deadly malice really can be.
