Product Description

Product Description
This book gives you ten new commandments for coping with the stresses, strains and pressures of modern-day living. Looking always with the inner eye, it is a book in search of psychological truth - the truth from which people are made and live. It describes the energies and textures of our life - emotional, mental, visceral, spiritual - and discerns the 'sorryness and grandeur' in all. The ten new commandments offered are ten skilful attitudes in pursuit of the beautiful life. Our past has made us, but does not define us, and we each have a genius for the future through simple attention to familiar things. The book draws on a wide tradition of human experience, and using story, illustration and comment, invites us to be alchemists for our own transformation. It is a handbook for those who know that something is always over - and that something has always begun. It suggests the work of life - the work beneath all other work.

About the Author
Simon Parke has written satire for radio and TV, picking up a Sony Radio Award. He was a priest in the Church of England for twenty years but now works in a supermarket, where he is Chair of the shop Union. He leads retreats, follows the beautiful game and lives in London.

4.0 out of 5 stars a guided walk, 15 April 2007
By Ross Mcgovern (Glasgow, UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I found this book unusually helpful. I took it with me on a personal retreat for which I'd otherwise left myself with very little guidance or structure. I found that it was a tremendous help to me in marshalling my thoughts. While I didn't use it entirely as the introduction advised, I did make sure I spent a good few days on it, rather than read straight through. Parke himself suggests that one stops to reflect every time an asterisk appears in the text, something that would stretch an obedient reading out to a fortnight or more.

While it's true that many of the truths and philosophies encountered in the book are given us vaguely, I think this is an exciting and realistic way to have written - for the point is that they are truths, rather than debating points. Neither it is necessary for Parke to delineate between Buddhism, Christianity etc. as he brings fruits of each before the reader. Instead he does what was really useful to me: he demonstrates how each truth can bring us closer to the beautiful life.

I recommend this book for those wishing to take a spiritual journey. It's not about what to believe, it's about how to live. And in that sense it brings us the very best of Christianity, AND Buddhism, AND every other philosophy it touches on.

5.0 out of 5 stars Simon Parke's 10 New Commandments, 4 Jan 2008

I have found, and continue to find, that this book gives me a tremendous lift each time I dip into it. It contains explanations of the sructure of the mind that really work for me. At the end of the day, that is what matters. It does not matter whether it stands up to academic scrutiny, and opinions always vary. It's whether it works for you that counts, and it does for me.

4.0 out of 5 stars Head or Heart?, 20 April 2008
By Deep Wells (Somerset, England) - See all my reviews
This book is very special - but I only discovered that after I read it for the third time! The first reading was done from the head with the intention of seeing what it was all about. At the second reading I took each section and allowed time for reflection. After some weeks I read it again in the light of my reflections and allowed it to speak to the 'inner me' which often gets ignored. All sorts of feelings emerged - some good and helpful, others less so, but for me and some of those with whom I have shared the book, this is an excellent tool for exploring how to be open and honest with oneself and taking life's journey forward in a new way.
