Book Description

They created the game but eighteen year old Nicholas Grayson mastered the rules.

They are young and entitled and utterly bored with their lives, so they play games to entertain themselves. They call it the “bet” and new girl Ellie Holbrook is their latest target. Ellie is not the kind of girl Nicholas dates, but she is pretty enough to be his next conquest and so he sets out to seduce her and claim a nice little prize at the end. But her seduction proves difficult when she openly rejects his advances. In his dogged pursuit of her he slowly finds himself in her small circle of trusted friends and meets her two year old daughter, Sophie.

Life takes a startling turn for Nicholas when he realizes his happiness now lies with the young mother and her daughter. Falling in love with Ellie isn’t something Nicholas ever thought could happen to him and he’s completely frightened at how fiercely she makes him feel. But before he can further examine those emotions and clearly process them, enemies from Nicholas’s personal circle of friends conspire to tear them apart and he must now decide whether their love is worth saving or allow his friends to take away the greatest thing that’s ever happened to him.

5.0 out of 5 stars Book 1 9 Jan. 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
They created their own form of amusement with "The Bet" a game played by a master - eighteen year old Nicholas Grayson a young man with his own moral compass, an emotional cripple with a personality of a cactus. He embraced his faults with gusto. He and his friends were young, spoiled and their goals in life were to break the law, stave off boredom and enjoy their form of entertainment with "the bet"

Nicholas Grayson was aware of his power over the fairer sex and he used that knowledge for his own selfish needs. Ellie Holbrook was his next "bird" of prey. Cock sure that he would win the bet Nicholas sets out to seduce her and claim his prize. Easy she wasn't and Nicholas realizes that all bets were off when Ellie says to him "seeing how you are so fond on my ass, feel free to kiss it while I walk away"

"Game on"

This story deals with a number of complex issues and the reader may find it a bit disjointed due to this but it will keep you sucked in right up until the last page. It is raw, gritty and downright nasty at times and I am sure (like me) you will want to throttle Nicholas and his friends but you will also want to find out if Nicholas and Ellie get their happy ever after.

Francette Phal delivers a well written and fluid writing style but be aware that the book is not suitable for under 18's as it deals with extreme drug and alcohol abuse and explicit sexual situations.

I have downloaded the sequel "Redemption" and off to find out what life has in store for Nicholas and Ellie.

Beautiful Disaster (The Bet, #1) by Francette Phal
4.5 stars!!

“He was his father’s child after all; he had learned about screwing people from the master himself.”

I originally read this book in January 2013; this was pre blog so I had not written a review for it. When I saw the sign up for the re-release, I looked back and read the blurb, kinda remembered the gist of the story and thought, yep, it was really good, I will sign up. Boy did I under estimate the power of this book, as soon as I started re-reading, I was sucked in once again, as soon as I read the first page, all the intricacies of the plot came flooding back, the story came flooding back and the tears came flooding back. Even though I have already read it, the pain, the emotion, the love that I had for this book came straight to the forefront and it didn’t leave until I read the last page. Now, I am so wrapped up in this story once again, I am heading straight back into Redemption, because I need to see this story to the end, it really is that powerful.

Eleanor/Ellie Holbrook had already lived a life even though she was 18 years old, she was strong though, sassy and took no crap from anyone. I won’t go into her full back story as it will spoil some of the plot, but it wasn’t pretty. She had seen and done most things that people would never dream about; she nearly lost herself and her life. There was one bright star that managed to pull her back from the brink, that and her ever faithful Uncle. Having home-schooled for a few years Ellie decides that she needs to experience her senior year at school. So for that final year she enrols, will life ever be the same again?

“Seeing as how you’re so fond of my ass, feel free to kiss it while I walk away.

4.0 out of 5 stars GRIPPING 3 Feb. 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Ellie Holbrook's life has not been easy. At just seventeen years old she's already a single parent. With a two year old daughter. Estranged from her parents, she has been living with her godfather Gabe, her life is slowly gaining some order and normality. After being home schooled, she's going to attend high school for her senior year.

Nicholas Grayson is a sorry excuse for a human being, rich, spoilt and cold. Caring nothing for the feelings of others. He and his cronies belittle and destroy others with the least provocation and reason. A long running bet between Nicholas and his friend Matt, sees Nicholas seducing any and every girl, whilst filming the whole scene. Ellie has just become the latest target of the bet.

This is a powerful story, dealing with some serious issues. The characters are very well fleshed out, the story is fast paced and dramatic. Not always easy reading but addictive.

The author knows how to tell a story. I might have given this five stars if it had been properly edited. There were many mistakes in this. But I will definitely be reading the next book.

5.0 out of 5 stars 5 'I've read this book 10 times' stars. 29 May 2015
By Carrie
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I don't even know where to start. This book is f'ed up in so many ways but it hurts so good.

First, this is the first 'dark' erotica book I've read. I think some would tag it as bdsm but I don't think this falls under that category.

It's a book about a very sick twisted serial killer and his obsession with a young teenage girl.

There's no redemption or happy ever after in this and I mean zero hearts and flowers. Everyone, as the title suggests is flawed.

I have to say francettphal is one of my favourite writers. She can take a story so harrowing and turn it into a masterful piece of work.
