fab series 30 Oct 2010

After finding this book a little hard to get into I did enjoy it, definately one to stick with (it might also help if you've read book one reasonably recently).

The main thing I like about this series is that it is told for a male point of view which I think it reasonably unusual for a YA book. Ethan is an awesome character who you can't help but warm to. The book picks up directly where the last book left off. You see Ethan trying to keep Lena together after all what happened on her birthday and you feel for him because she really isn't helping herself at all. The first chunk of the book it was like you weren't seeing Lena at all but a completely different character and I for one spent most of it willing her to pull herself together and feeling for Ethan even more. As I said to start with the first part of the book is very slow and I found myself questioning an awful lot of what was actually going on because it all seemed a bit weird to me. It wasn't until about half way through when a revelation was made about Lena that everything else I had just read clicked into place and I started to understand why it had been written the way it had.

Without giving away too much once I hit this point I really started to enjoy that book for a variety of reasons. Firstly there are a whole host of secondary characters both old and new who pop up constantly and are brilliant for a variety of reasons. Particular favourites of mine were Ridley and a new character Liv. I also love the character of Lucille Ball (the cat) and was pleased that there was something more to her than what she initially seemed as I was continually fascinated with her. I enjoyed the scenes in the tunnels which I thought were well written and added and creepy dimension to the book. I also loved the story line involving Macon and his relationship with Jane (I won't spoil it for those of you who haven't read it but it is awesome to say the least). The final resolution (well the resolution for the time being) was good, although once again we are left on a cliffhanger not really sure which way things are going to eventually fall.

Definately a slow burner which you need to stick with. When things finally do click in place they really make sense of what has just happened. Certainly one to seek out if you enjoyed the first book.

The second book by the authors of Beautiful Creature's which picks up where the previous left off. As with the first book it's the characters that really sell the title as a love is tested to the limits against a prophecy of doom.

It's definitely a title for the older teen market, it has elements that the readers can identify with and the principle players continue to grow.

Finally this tale is on that was enjoyable and one that will lead the two author for one hell of a confrontation in the next offering. A real joy and I'll look forward to seeing what arrives.

The anticipated sequel to Beautiful Creatures, although I wasn't a huge fan of Beautiful Creatures I felt drawn to reading this as sequels can sometimes turn an entire series around for me. Although there were good aspects of the story, I cant say I was completely enamoured with it. Unfortunately, for me this was kind of 'in between'.

The story picks up shortly after the dramatic ending of Beautiful Creatures however personalities and interactions have altered drastically within the time frame given. A little unsettling with the continuity, I did find it hard to reconcile the image I already had of the characters with this new portrayal. There are a number of new tangents that the plot has taken dividing the characters, I was left wondering how it would all merge back together.

Lena's actions were understandable to a degree, lost in her grief and apprehension of the future, trying to change the way she feels by changing the way she looks. As the narrative is told in first person from Ethan's point of view, we have a one dimensional perspective of events, we can only guess at Lena's thoughts and feelings via hints given. This can be quite frustrating, although it is a good parallel for the frustration that Ethan is feeling due to the barrier that Lena has created.

I did adore the Gothic imagery and particularly the use of animals as familiars - the dog and the cat having a conversation was brilliant to imagine. The use of southern colloquialisms and mannerisms added to the imagery and realism of the plot. The descriptions were totally sensory making them easy to picture.

However, some scenarios seemed incredulous at first, although as they developed they became more believable. I did remain skeptical and pessimistic throughout *I know you can hardly believe it*. There were some interesting twists and a rather unusual cliffhanger.

My favourite part of this book was Link's character development. Ironic or profound use of the name as he is the link that holds everyone together; he is totally comfortable with who he is and doesn't alter for anyone. His optimism/positivity provides a refreshing respite from the 'doom and gloom'.

The introduction of Liv provided a nice contrast to Lena in both appearance and demeanour, nevertheless I was not keen on the romantic angle pursued by both Lena and Ethan; it just did not gel in my mind at all. For two people to have such intense emotions for each other; they were able to alter them very quickly.

I am sure this will be a winner with a lot of people but unfortunately I only liked it rather than loving it.

Good
The first one of this trilogy was better. But this part is also dynamic and it was interesting to read Ethen's point of view. I'm so impatient to read to next chapter :)
