Preisner's beautiful, haunting theme, tentative but persistent, (just like the main character), appears early on in the film. We hear it while our young hero is still in Vietnam and it re-emerges when, after all the trials and tribulations involved in his quest, he finally tracks down his father in New York. Gently assertive, the music sometimes seems like a poignant echo harking back to the young man's origins even as he is drawn ever further away. At the same time it is affirmative music which runs through the saga like a thread linking east to west and drawing the inevitable journey on for thousands of miles. Like all good film music, this soundtrack reinforces the plot, in this case heightening the sense of yearning. Preisner is so good at his craft.
