Album Description

Zbigniew Preisner visits "The Beautiful Country"

The film marks the second successful collaboration between composer Zbigniew Preisner and director Hans Petter Moland, following their previous experience on "Aberdeen" (2000). It is to the musical territory of this film that Preisner's returns, with similar orchestrations and a distinct harmonic language deftly tackling continued themes of abandonment, loss, and reunion.

Recorded in Warsaw, in 2003, the composer's uplifting music is performed by the Orkiestra Radiowas under the baton of Michal Nalecz Nieziolowski. Alongside recognisable contrapuntal traits, Preisner's music features eclectic instrumental pairings and ethnic timbres – with much use made of his idiomatic writing for the African Kalimba.

About the Artist

Often cited as one of the most outstanding film composers of his generation, Polish-born Preisner is intenationally-recognised for his work with director Krzysztof Kieslowski and script-writer Krzysztof Piesiewicz on "Dekalog", "The Double Life of Veronique", and the "Three Colours" trilogy. In dedication to Kieslowski's memory, his work "Requiem for my friend" – written for recording and live performance – received its world premiere at the Teatr Wielki, Warsaw on October 1, 1998. Zbigniew Preisner is a two-time Golden Globe® Award nominee. He is also the recipient of two Cesars from the French Film Academy, a Silver Bear from the Berlin Film Festival in 1997, and three L.A. Critics Association Awards over consecutive years for Most Outstanding Composer of Film Music.

Affirmative Echoes 17 Aug 2007
By WAB
Format:Audio CD
Preisner's beautiful, haunting theme, tentative but persistent, (just like the main character), appears early on in the film. We hear it while our young hero is still in Vietnam and it re-emerges when, after all the trials and tribulations involved in his quest, he finally tracks down his father in New York. Gently assertive, the music sometimes seems like a poignant echo harking back to the young man's origins even as he is drawn ever further away. At the same time it is affirmative music which runs through the saga like a thread linking east to west and drawing the inevitable journey on for thousands of miles. Like all good film music, this soundtrack reinforces the plot, in this case heightening the sense of yearning. Preisner is so good at his craft.

Hauntingly Beautiful 17 Mar 2009
By J.M. - Published on Amazon.com
Zbigniew Preisner is one of the best composers of the century. He has composed music for many European movies, as well as some orchestral and vocal works such as In Silence, Night, and Dreams and Requiem for a Friend. His music is hauntingly beautiful and expressive beyond measure. At times, his music has the gentle and soothing quality of James Newton Howard, and other times its complexity is beyond words. I highly recommend this soundtrack as well as his other works.
hauntingly beautiful 7 Nov 2011

The compositions on this CD are just beautiful, as are all of Zbigniew Priesner's music. His music not only fills the films that he is creating, but they stand alone as wonderful themes that the listener will go to over and over. This Cd is well worth the purchase. I love it !
