Product Description

Review

Delightful portraits of 40 champion breeds recognised by the Poultry Club of Great Britain.

(Bookseller)

Primped, preened and proud - a beauty parade of chickens supreme.

(Daily Telegraph)

The ultimate in poultry portraiture, this collection of photographs by Andrew Perris shows 40 of the world's most fammous breeds in all their primped, preened and prize-winning perfection… There is nothing fowl about this egg-cellent introduction to our feathered friends.

(Daily Express)

Experience gleaned in advertising photography lends Andrew Perris's portraits of champion chicken breeds a studied poise and superficial sheen that lifts them out of the world of the nugget and (almost) on to the catwalk.

(Time Out)

The photographs in the book are fantastic and the poetic descriptions, eloquently written by a poultry expert are instructive and repay careful reading… I used my strongest magnifying glass to scrutinise the beautiful birds illustrated in this beautiful book. It has been an honour and a pleasure to review it.

(Deborah Devonshire Spectator)

We see chickens in a completely new light.

(Yorkshire Gazette)

A ravishing new book.

(Sussex Life)

This Ugly Betty of the farming world has had a surprise makeover and is demanding to be adored. In a ravishing new book, the lowly farmyard fowl has decided to grab its moment in the spotlight with both feet and, well, appears to have rather enjoyed itself.

(Sussex Life)

The sort of book you'd buy for a friend as a joke and end up reading.

(Newcastle Journal)

About the Author

CHRISTIE ASCHWANDEN is a journalist, essayist and poultry farmer in Cedaredge, Colorado. Her writing has appeared in more than 60 publications including the New York Times, Reader’s Digest and New Scientist. She raises an assortment of free-range chickens, heritage turkeys, guinea fowl, ducks and geese at the Crag Crest Poultry Ranch and Farm.

ANDREW PERRIS has tackled a wide range of challenging commissions during the 20 years he has worked as a photographer. Many have included animals, from snails on location to elephants in the studio, but pigs have to be the ultimate challenge so far because they simply do not stand still! That said, he has learned along the way and has met some fantastic characters (and pigs). His numerous corporate and advertising clients include Virgin, Sainsburys, Parker Pens, P&O Ferries, and Royal Bank of Scotland.

I was bought this egg-stravagant celebration of all things chicken by a friend for Christmas and I can say that it truly ruffled a few feathers in my household. Some of the photos are frankly, clucking fantastic, whilst some just cracked us up. You'd definitely be making a poultry choice in buying the 'Beautiful Cows' book over this. Insert other chicken themed puns in keeping with the synopsis here -

This is a wonderful picture book of examples of chicken breeds. Many of my own favourites are here, including breeds which used to be more common, but which formed the breeding stock for the hybrid egg producers, and broiler birds which are most commonly kept commercially, and those which were always kept in small numbers, and rare.
The glaring omissions are Pekin bantams, and North Holland Blues, both of which I would have expected to find. However, I am being pernickety - the colours, stance and general appearance of these birds are beautifully presented, and the book is one I shall go back to for 'eye candy'.

This really is one for your Amazon basket! A beautiful book about beautiful birds - and useful as well. Expert information adds to a thoroughly professional guide. We used to keep (and breed) chickens and bantams. This reminds us a little of the fun we had with these glamourous creatures.

I actually bought this book for my mum as a wee joke because she has a bit of a thing about chickens but it actually turned out to be a really beautiful and informative wee read. Very good quality pictures and descriptions written in very good humour, really delightful

I love this book, chickens are stunning birds i brought this to use as a reference book for drawing purposes and not for the information. A wonderful pictorial reference book, difficult to top I would think.

This is certainly the book for lovers of exotic chickens. Over 40 species are written about in detail giving general description, features, use, related breeds, shows and keeping and caring.
However it is the illustrations which are important for the book but an excellent opportunity was lost as a good number of the studio portraits of the chickens have a far to dark background and destroy the integrity and detail of the images.

This is an intriguing book. It was a fun book that we spotted in a garden centre book shop. As always Amazon beat retail prices so I bought it on line. Our friend loves chickens so we also got one for her as a birthday present.

It is one of a series and makes interesting for anyone browsing your book case for things to pick up and read.

Delivery was quick too from Amazon.
