On the first day of the Somme, July 1st 1916, the VIII Corps lost 14,000 officers and men trying to capture this village, the high ground surrounding it, and the neighbouring village of Serre. Beaumont Hamel was not captured until November 13th 1916.
This excellent book covers both battles of July and November. It contains excellent maps, and some amazing aerial pictures of the battlefield as it was in 1916. There are many stories of the men who fought and died there. There is also an excellent guide to the numerous battlefield cemeteries which abound in the area. A must read for the serious student of the Great War, and also an excellent guide for the visitor.
A muist buy.

I first read this book a few years ago. Thoroughly researched with good maps and photos, this is a worthy addition to the many books about the somme 1916. If you are a first time visitor to the somme, then this is a must-buy. Good accounts of the terrible battle fought there during the summer and autumn months of 1916.

Somme 24 May 2000
By Eric Albert Redfearn - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback
Beaumont-Hamel is one of the mosy interesting areas of the Somme today. Just south of the village, numerous trenches abound and not far away are some of the Commonwealth war graves which abound in the area. The area is associated with the Newfoundland regiment which fought here on 1st July, 1916 and suffered losses of more than 90%. Nigel Cave has produced a well-researched book with many good photos and maps. Thoroughly recommended.
FASCINATING AND VITAL HISTORY! 2 Nov. 2012

The Battleground Europe series guide books are an absolute treasure to the armchair historian or the battlefield tourist. The author, Nigel Cave has been visiting World War One battlefields since the age of 14 (1968). He has made about 50 visits or more! He is a preeminent historian, needless to say! Beaumont Hamel is the name of a village in Picardy that has come to represent a crucial aspect of the July 1, 1916 Battle of the Somme. For a strategic overview of the first day of battle on the Somme I strongly recommend reading Martin Middlebrook's book FIRST DAY ON THE SOMME, THE. It was here that the Hawthorn Redoubt mine was blown (dramatically captured on film) leaving behind an impressive crater. Also, it was at Beaumont Hamel that the ill-fated Newfoundland Regiment suffered such terrible casualties. Today, the regiment's trenches are preserved in a special park that is a huge draw for tourists and historians. This volume helps to give the reader a better appreciation for the courage and sacrifice of the troops in the Battle of the Somme and later actions. Also, this volume covers the ground from Redan Ridge to the Ancre. Information on cemeteries and memorials are provided as well as suggested tours. Great maps, diagrams and black and white photos help elucidate this vital history. I also recommend these volumes that pertain to the Somme battlefield: MONTAUBAN: SOMME (Battleground Europe. Somme) La Boiselle: Somme (Battleground Europe) Thiepval (Battleground Europe) Gommecourt (Battleground Europe Series) and Serre (Battleground Europe. Somme)
