Biography

"The story began in Harold Macmillan’s “never had it so good” ’50s Britain. It should be fiction: four teenagers with no more than eight O’Levels between them, running and biking and busing and busking all over Liverpool in search of new chords and old guitars and half-decent drum kit and any gig at all.

They were determined to amount to something – in George’s words “we just had this amazing inner… Read more in Amazon's The Beatles Store

5.0 out of 5 stars An unusual Beatles album?, 13 Oct 2007
This review is from: Beatles For Sale import CD (Audio CD)
The "Beatles For Sale" was the group's fourth LP and is the album, which contains their more obscure songs, in terms of singles and compilations. However, I think that these "obscure" songs are actually some of their most melodic and memorable compositions. Not all the songs on this LP were written by Lennon & McCartney, but these are the ones they did write: No Reply, I'm A Loser, Baby's In Black, I'll Follow The Sun, Eight Days A Week, Every Little Thing, I Don't Want To Spoil The Party, What You're Doing. The remaining songs were covers and are a great version of Chuck Berry's Rock And Roll Music (only John Lennon could sing this so well), the dramatic Mr Moonlight (by Johnson), more rock'n'roll with Kansas City (by Leiber & Stoller) with Hey Hey Hey Hey (by Penniman), Words Of Love (by Buddy Holly), Honey Don't (by Carl Perkins)sung by Ringo Starr, and the live favourite Everybody's Trying To Be My Baby (by Perkins) sung by George Harrison. Not only is this one of The Beatles' best albums, but the gatefold cover with the live concert photo inside was one of their best too. Here is the tracklisting:
1. No Reply
2. I'm A Loser
3. Baby's In Black
4. Rock 'n' Roll Music
5. I'll Follow The Sun
6. Mr Moonlight
7. Kansas City/Hey Hey Hey Hey
8. Eight Days A Week
9. Words Of Love
10. Honey Don't
11. Every Little Thing
12. Don't Want To Spoil The Party
13. What You're Doing
14. Everybody's Tryin' To Be My Baby

4.0 out of 5 stars ONE, TWO, THREE, FOUR..., 23 April 2006
By Lawyeraau - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Beatles For Sale import CD (Audio CD)
Coming on the heels of the highly touted, critically successful album, "A Hard Day's Night", this one pales somewhat in comparison. It is still certainly worthy of note, however, as are all albums put out by The Beatles, and it is a very good album by any measure.

Here, only eight of the fourteen tracks were penned by the McCartney/Lennon songwriting duo, but they constitute an interesting shift in style, showing more depth, maturity, and complexity. From the somewhat dark, pensive " I'm a Loser" to the melodic lament of "Baby's in Black", followed by the pop ballad, "I'll Follow the Sun", it is clear that The Beatles are forging in a somewhat new direction.

The other six tracks on this CD are pop and rock standards upon which The Beatles have placed their signature imprimatur. Juxtaposed with the McCartney/Lennon songs, it makes for an interesting, though quirky, listening experience. As with all Beatles CDs, no music collection should be without it.
