5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Musos' Take On Beatle Music, 12 Dec 2008
Unlike so many Beatles dvds on the market, this one doesn't merely attempt to retell the tale. Like me, you've probbaly seen and heard that one a million times; footage of John and Yoko in Amsterdam/Vancouver/London anyone? yawn; old newsreel of Paul getting married/Ringo walking into Abbey Road/ John in India/ George, well, being George? zzzzzzzzzzzzz. No this film takes the music and strips it bare. Some less frequently invited guests such as Barry Miles, Klaus Voorman and Maureen Cleaves ['er from the standard' as JL used to refer to his frind] are on hand to speak about the creation of many top songs - it appears these three and others here were around as certain tunes were being composed - and the BBC's director of music Chris Ingham, and Head of Music at Surrey University, Allan Moore are on hand to break down every major tune L & M wrote during the years this dvd covers - on keyboards both - to reveal a million and one things you probably never realised about these darn classics. For example, they both identify tracks that - despite claims to the contrary - were clearly co-written, by showing how one part of said song matches, almost identically [albeit well disguised], a pattern regularly used by, say, L - then does the same with M. This probbaly loses a lot in the telling, and that's only one example of such myth debunking that goes on during the quite fascinating two hours this film lasts - but it's def well worth getting or viewing if you have any kind of interest about how these two scousers soundtracked so many lives - There is plenty of live footage, and admitedly you seen the majority of it before, but the way its used here, weavin gin and out of stuctyaral breaksown by the films two musos, is like nothing I've seen before. And if you've already seen Volume 1 [Composing The Beatles Songbook 57[!]- 65, then believe me, while that on was good, this is marvellous - over and out!
