This is a brilliant attempt at reconstructing an audio version of a potential Quarrymen gig from about 1959. There is a comprehensive 36 page booklet which includes a Quarrymen timeline side by side with the UK release dates of all songs on the set. Details of all songs are in the book along with useful info about the relevance of each song to the Beatles. There's no skiffle on here but skiffle and other non-rocknroll songs they played are covered on the companion disc

There's now at least 4 of these Beatles Beginnings CDs on the market each one an improvement on the last. With this 2 part set you get a detailed booklet.
However one small quibble-no way could the Beatles have heard Lawdy Miss Clawdy at the time of the Quarrymen-the first Lloyd Price single issued in the U K was Just because and Elvis would have been the source.
The recording appeared about 1960 after Stagger Lee had topped the U S charts

These compilations are actually a pretty good history of what UK beat groups were listening to and playing in the late 50s and early 60s. They are also likely to reach out to more than just fans of the Beatles.

The "Beginnings" series strikes again with another spectacular collection of original recordings that in this case inspired or influenced The Beatles. This is the second in a 6-disc set on The Beatles. As with others in the series (2 on the Rolling Stones and one each on The Kinks and The Who), the accompanying booklet has extremely thorough and welcome annotation. It breaks down the tracks into 8 categories: Beatles studio recording; Radio broadcast; Beatles solo recording; Demo or studio outtake; Performed Live; Live Recording Available; Influential on Beatles recording; and Get Back Sessions. I applaud whomever performed the extensive research that resulted in these fascinating choices. I hope that History of RnB Records is planning discs on The Yardbirds, The Animals and Jimi Hendrix as well.

Their other series, "How Britain Got the Blues", is every bit as good (if not better). Bravo to History of RnB Records for these releases and the outstanding music scholarship that accompanies them.

I have the original other 6 CDs on the "Beatle Beginning" series and they are marvellous, fantastic, awesome! Great for Beatles fans and even greater for rock'n'roll lovers and this kind of music that started changing the world in the '40s, '50s till the great Beatle explosion! And the one of a king quality booklet provides detailed information on each song enhancing the experience on these music that inspired The Beatles. It is a must-have, like the other CDs on the "Beatles Beginnings" series, as the entire series reveals a perfect compilation and even a scholar introduction into international popular music! Great, great, great!
